Angels Lose 6-3 at Rangers

Detmers vs Heaney. Former teammates going against each other. This will either be a pitching duel nor a bullpen game. That is just the nature of these pitchers. While Detmers has shown more promise and is younger than Heaney, he is not without flaws this season. So how did it go?

Well, Detmers went 6 innings, giving up 1 runs on 3 hits, striking out 8 and walking 3. He outlasted Heaney, which was vital with how spent both bullpens were. Heaney did not even make it out of the 4th.

8K for Detmers

The offense took a hit early with Neto leaving with a cramp. His bat was needed, and the loss of it was almost as bad as his missing glove. With Neto out, Walsh was in as Gio Urshela was still not healthy either.

Indeed, the offense scored 1 run in 8 innings and a bad throw by Rengifo at ss gave Texas more outs that led to 2 runs. Not that it was hardly the difference, neither could prevent the home runs allowed by Herget.

Highlighted Recap

The Angels struck first thanks to an errant throw by Texas.

1-0 Angels

It was a run that was matched by Detmers giving up a home run.

Tied game

Despite the plethora of baserunners, however, it really was a pitching duel between Detmers and 3 Texas arms. It remained 1-1 until the 7th, as it became a battle of the bullpens.

Sadly, it was the Angels bullpen who blinked as Herget allowed 3 runs thanks to back to back home runs in the 7th. It was now 4-1 Texas.

Then Davidson gave up 2 more in the 8th to make it 6-1 Texas. Well, a Rengifo bad throw made one unearned, but still.

Shohei did make both of those back with a 2 run BLAST making it 6-3 Texas. If nothing else they are making sure that Will Smith, no not that Will Smith, is too exhausted for tomorrow.

HE IS TOMORROW’S PITCHER!

It was too much for the Angels to overcome and they lose, snapping the win streak.

Upcoming

Ohtani vs Eovaldi tomorrow for the final game of this 4 game series. Ohtani will need to be the ace of the team to give the Angels a chance at a series win.

Heaney trade to NYY: July 30, 2021
Detmers MLB debut: August 1, 2021

Teammates? More like replacement and replaced. This makes Heaney have more of a chip on his shoulder. Now I get it why he did so well yesterday.

Not sure that “he did so well”, but more like the Angels just couldn’t get the timely hits. He was at 70+ pitches by the 3rd. If Rengifo just had been a tad more patient in his AB there rather than hit the first pitch he saw, Heaney would have been probably done sooner. He left in the 4th inning with the bases loaded. A cheap single or a HR there would have ballooned his ERA. TX’s bullpen bailed him out big time.

At least for me, “doing so well” against a former team would be pitching a 7-8 inning shutout with 10 Ks.

You win some, you lose some. The bullpen will give up some runs eventually, and well, it’s from the people we expect.

Offense didn’t do too much with all those LOBsters against Heaney. Had him on the ropes a couple of times but never can quite put something together. I fondly remember Heaney as the type of pitcher who would have 12 Ks in a game but also give up 5 runs.

Silver lining is Detmers looked fine against a good team. Hopefully he keeps up this more efficient version.

Detmers pitching better is great news. If we can get that most starts, that’s gold.
Now, if we can get Sandoval to fall in line and pull his head out of his ass. That’s not a bad rotation if Anderson is your #6. We’re set if new and improved BP is for real and a solid offense. I hear October baseball is fun.

Gio’s bulky back definitely complicates things. I doubt Neto will be back tomorrow but even if he is the Angels will need to have a back up plan.

that means that someone needs to go on the IL and then the Angels need to add Fletch back on to the 40 Man. I think the the guillotine candidates are : Jimmy Herget, Gerardo Reyes, Zack Weiss, Chris Okey or the could move Jose Suarez to the 60 day IL (which would prevent him from returning until early July.)

The Angels are sorely in need of a competent backup shortstop and if Fletch is really healthy then this is a no brainer. But remember they get no do overs. Once Fletch returns to the 40 man he would probably elect free agency if we ever tried to send him down again.

Rengifo’s defensive incompetency was glaringly clear in this game, and as you mentioned Fletch call up is a strong possibility now. Soto is another alternate, but personally I would love to see Fletch back, and hopefully he would contribute offensively so that Angels are forced to keep Fletch on active roster and trade or DFA Rengifo.

My Lylin’ eyes actually brought me to the revelation that Soto’s defense just aint that good-Certainly not as good as Fletcher’s if he indeed is indeed healthy.

I agree with you that the Fletcher I remember is better than Soto defensively. Soto looked nervous in the last game he played before he was sent down and ended up making several “errors” (though not scored as so), but you and I know that they were errors. I wonder if he was tense because he witnessed Neto being so marvelously gifted that he felt inferior and defeated.

Now we have seen Neto for several months, our standard for SS has risen tremendously. Even Andrew Velazquez would look substandard if compared to Neto.

I will be looking forward to news regarding possible Angels transactions and report on Neto and Urshela health/availability.

I know we hoped for a split, or even to win 1-3. But will still be satisfied with a split, despite going up 2-0. Those wins were predicated on a ‘few’ Tejas errors that we uncharacteristically took advantage of. TBS, 3/4 would be very nice.

Once all the games end today:

The only teams to reach 70 games played are the Angels, Rays, A’s, Rockies.

Our next off day is Monday. It’s been a grueling schedule for us thus far.

I don’t know if you looked ahead, but next Thursday is also an off day for them. It is rather unusual to have two off days in the same week. Hopefully, that will be beneficial especially for Shohei. Angels have an option of having him pitch the second game against Doyers on normal 5 day rest or pitch the first game against Rockies on 7 day rest. It will be an intriguing decision by Nevin.

It was said on the broadcast tonight that Shohei will make his start against the Dodgers on normal rest.

The rest days will surely help Shohei, but more importantly will help our bullpen.

I must have missed the announcement. Thank you for the info. That means that they will skip Barria and put Shohei there. Probably won’t affect Barria as much. The rest of the rotation will be also pushed later by 2 days each, probably more beneficial than harmful. Also going against Rockies followed by White Sox where by we could potentially finish with 19-8 or even better in June.

I just looked up and you are correct. According to MLBTR, since Angels are already on the hook for his $7 MM, Texas is only responsible for the prorated amount of league minimum ($ 720K). Texas bullpen is a mess, so it kinda makes sense. Even if he makes the team, we will not see him until August. Chances are he will be released again by Texas.

This was a game the offense had to win and didn’t. We were tied until the AAA pitchers came in.

all good, take 3/4 tomorrow

Tomorrow’s win will mean not only for this series win, but also will be 4-3 in season series. It will be a symbolic victory to leave a strong impression on Texas that Angels are not to be taken lightly when they meet again in August.

Sounds good to me.

Winning tomorrow and taking a 4-game series with Shohei on the mound vs their ace in Texas will be one helluva statement.

Then we sweep the hapless Royals and move to 42-32.

Simple.

Though Shohei the pitcher did not do so well last week, Shohei the batter made up for the counterpart’s folly, and Angles rallied to win against Mariners ace, Castillo. Hopefully, tomorrow both Shohei the pitcher and batter work together well to an emphatic victory over Texas.

It almost sounds like Shohei has splitter personality. That’s all the dad’s jokes for tonight.

We are facing Eovaldi tomorrow, if you were not aware. He is All Star caliber this season and is Texas’ best pitcher.

Not to mention that he’s been pitching a lot better than Shohei lately… AND he completely shut our offense down when he faced us in Anaheim …

You’re right. Fk it. Let’s forfeit tomorrow, catch an early flight and play a few rounds of “Will this fit up there?” when we get home instead of playing the game. The past happened. Why try? I mean, it’s Nathan Eovaldi people. Walter Johnson…. Bob Gibson….. Steve Carlton…. Nathan Eovaldi…. Black Plague.

Lol.

AGAIN gitch throws a Strawman out there… This is a pattern for you.

Nobody said anything about a “forfeit.” The context of my comment was a response to Kiyo who was talking about an “emphatic” win. Refuting the idea of an emphatic win is not the same thing as saying the Angels have no chance, or by extension that they should forfeit.

Outright mocking you and a “strawman argument” are two totally different things. It’s cute you learned that term though. Good for you.

Your argument with with Kiyo…. dude, all you did was make a bunch of sad sack points that would actually ADD to the emphatic nature of our winning this game… seriously, all you did was ake a bunch of pointless stern “hur derr dee serious durr donkey hurr lemme tur ewww…” noise. Which is why I always find you so hah hah funny. Like a clown that amuses me.

It is really unfortunate that our bats did not take advantage of Heaney today. Had we scored some crooked numbers like 5 runs in the first few innings, Nevin would not have gone to Herget and T. Davidson today to go for win.

Furthermore, I am afraid that Herget and T. Davidson restored Texas belief by reawakening their potent bats. We had a chance to crush Texas and shake their confidence, and now our chance for tomorrow is much more formidable.

With Neto most likely not playing and Urshela questionable at best, our infield is suddenly thin. I would not be surprised that Texas will be favored above 150+ because of all these factors.

However, last time I checked, baseball is still played on the field, not by Las Vegas odds makers. Trout hits well against Eovaldi 0.333 BA and so do Urshela 0.333 BA and David Fletcher 0.667 BA. So I hope Urshela can play and Fletcher called up. Eovaldi will probably pitch around Shohei, so other batters need to show up. Eovaldi pitched 8 innings last time against us. So one of the keys to our victory is to be patient, battle with fouling pitches after 2 strike, and get him out of the mound as quickly as possible to get to their horrible pen.

Another key is for Shohei the pitcher to keep Texas to 3 runs or under with at least 6 innings of pitching. He needs to focus especially on 1st inning and 5th inning.

I know you will be watching, as I am. Let’s cheer for Angels win.

Concerned about how long Neto may be out. Nevin’s postgame on Neto’s left side cramp was quite vague. (I am assuming it was calf, but could be anywhere in the left leg.) He said that Neto felt it during practice throw to 1st base in the previous inning prior to his bat. Apparently he felt more discomfort when he was taking a practice swing, immediately reported to Nevin and training staff, and he was replaced for “precautionary” reason. There will be further evaluation tomorrow morning, and the worst case scenario is Neto will be on IL. In that case, Fletch may be called up, but Rengifo will probably remain on active roster.
