Angels Lose To Padres 3-0

Griffin Canning Versus Blake Snell

Inning 1

Griffin Canning got two strikeouts in the first inning. Sandwiched in between he gave up three singles in a row and then a wild pitch scored one runner. He also gave up a four pitch walk to Roughned Odor to load the bases for the second time in the inning before finally getting the third out. Maybe he doesn’t want to be the sixth starter after all. Blake Snell also got a couple of strikeouts. It was 1-0 Padres after the first.

Inning 2

The second inning went a little smoother as the Padres went three up three down. Hunter Renfroe singled and then Blake Snell threw a wild pitch. The next three Angels went down in order though.

Inning 3

In the third, Taylor Ward committed a fielding error to allow Fernando Tatis Jr. to reach base safely. Matt Carpenter then got his second single of the day and Tatis Jr. scored. Two Angels grounded out and Luis Rengifo singled. Brandon Drury lined out to left. It was 2-0 Padres after the third.

Inning 4

David Calabrese came in to replace Taylor Ward in the fourth inning. Jose Azocar singled but was caught stealing by Chad Wallach. A couple of other guys made outs so the score remained the same. The Angels didn’t score in the fourth.

Griffin Canning did strike out four.

Inning 5

Aaron Loup came in to replace Canning in the fifth inning and gave up a homer to Fernando Tatis Jr. The Angels went three up three down. 3-0 Padres.

Inning 6

Loup started off the sixth inning by hitting a batter. After Roughned Odor hit into a force out, Austin Warren came in to pitch. He gave up a single to Tim Lopes. He got out of the inning without giving up another run. First pitch swinging Luis Rengifo hit a fly ball out to center field. Brandon Drury lined out to center. Osmy Gregorio struck out.

Inning 7

Jose Quijada came in to pitch the seventh inning and did fine. The Angels, in turn, went three up three down again.

Inning 8

Ben Joyce pitched the eighth inning and gave up a first pitch single. He also walked a guy but other than that got out of the inning without much trouble. David Calabrese hit a double but nothing else happened in the bottom of the eighth.

Inning 9

The Padres made three quick outs. Jordyn Adams got a two out single then Adrian Placencia popped out to end the game..

Ohviously we will win 106 games this year. we will also ohviously find a way to lose 107 games. We will do this through the power of Arte’s evil and cheapness.

I kind of don’t care which of Canning/Davidson wind up as the extra starter. I like both fine for about 1-2 times through the order…. honestly, maybe they BOTH pitch on those 6th starts, that could be a fairly effective 6 IP at the ass end of the ass end of the rotation. They can both throw a couple pen innings every now and again when there’s 10 days till they need to start again, etc. What ever happens I still think Tucky should win the Cy Young.

I have decided to call Silseth “The Filth” when he eventually comes up to replace an injury. This is to preempt him simply having “Chasey” or “Silly” dumped on him.

Jeez Ward/Trout/Renfroe is gonna be a fine outfield for us. Makes me happy. Rendon/Urshela/Drury/Walsh isn’t a bad horn to round either. Ohtani. I have the feeling he’ll be a solid DH. We’ll have some cold streaks, but there are gonna be some periods where we strait break young nervous pitchers minds. Fletcher, Rengifo, Lamb, Thaiss (maybe), O’Hoppe (maybe), Moniak, Phillips…. that depth makes me happy too.

I know Ben Joyce is the sexy boy, I dig him too, but my pick for secret weapon that shows up in the pen at some point is Jake Webb.

Welp. Guys will stay healthy and we will win because Arte is so evil or guys will get hurt and we will lose because PTP is stupid. We’ll start seeing soon…

WTF, they sent Moniak down instead of eating a cheap contract-that’s the same GM who released both J-UP and Albert Roids! Did Phillips even out hit Squid? Why are the powers to be so in love with a guy that can’t hit? Heck I would have been understanding keeping Squid over Phillips, at least Squid can field everywhere on the diamond.

Joyce sent down and we kept Loup, that hurts too. Should have sent “Q” down to learn how to deal with the pitch clock.

It’s been explained about 74 times why Moniak is down and Phillips is keeping pine warm to start the season.

Exactly. I’d rather see Moniak getting regular work in SLC.

No. The Angels FO is keeping the much better and incredibly proven Moniak down in AAA not because making him sit on a bench 99% of the next six weeks may squander the progress he’s made while Phillips is totally capable of fielding some 9th inning fly balls and standing at first base in the bottom of the 8th with a helmet on.

No. It’s because dad is an asshole and he doesn’t want to squander less than 2M. I mean Arte.

I did see a rumor that they are shopping Loup – but I think that is to keep Barria (or Thaiss) around.

Didn’t watch the game but wow, Blake Snell went 6 innings and only threw 38 pitches, 33 for strikes. That’s domination. He did that with 3 hits a walk and 6k’s. Just amazing. Like I said, didn’t watch the game maybe he was great, but seems we had a poor approach at the plate to let that happen, gotta take some pitches, especially for a guy not known for going deep in the game.

I’ll just make a prediction that we see Moniak, Joyce, and Canning(assuming they go with Tucky D) before May 1st.

you know how I feel about Phillips “winning” the job of 4th OF.

The question has been asked “which is better? Moniak playing 5 or 6 games a week in SLC or once or twice in Anaheim? as if he’ll be even better!! with more minor league experience. I see it as “which is better? Us getting zero from Moniak or getting his at-bats once or twice a week?” And also, which is better? Getting zero from Moniak ’cause he’s in Triple-A or minus from Phillips?”

I expect Davidson to be the 6th starter. So we’ll have a 4th OF because he’s got a major league deal (not because he’s the best option) and we’ll have a 6th starter because he’s out of options.

Of course I hope I’m wrong and both Phillips and Davidson prove useful.

Look at the schedule. Moniak is likely to literally see three starts this next month. Not once or twice a week. We will also likely see Phillips get about ten at bats this month. And Moniak has not proven to be the cold blooded hitting machine that can handle MLB pitching…. much less long ass lay offs and THEN MLB pitching.

My guess is that they’ll slide Moniak onto the roster once it’s time to manipulate the line up a little more in a few weeks. then he could see two or three starts a week.

Ohtani 4 2/3, 1 run, 8 Ks in a minor league game, 81 pitches. He said his goals were getting his pitch count up, to get used to the pitch clock, to be ready for Opening Day
