Angels beat the Mariners, somehow

The Angels faced the Mariners for the first time since the brawl. Mariners are a wild card team, meanwhile, the Angels are trying to not lose 100 games. Or maybe they are trying to lose, it was hard to tell.

Patrick Sandoval did his job, going 5 and a third shutout innings, giving up 3 hits and 4 walks while striking out 5.

Nice one Sandy

The offense did almost nothing, almost. Scoring 3 runs, with 2 in the 8th to give a cushion for a save. A save that was blown by Jesse Chavez. Because Angels.

Highlighted Recap

The Angels struck in the first with a run scored by Rengifo thanks to Jo Adell.

1-0 Angels

There was almost another in the 2nd, but Sierra was thrown out.

Almost

Angels continue to male blunders by getting a caught stealing in the 3rd.

Come on…

At least the Angels scored 2 more in the 8th thanks to Stassi.

3-0 Angels!

Those were needed as Jesse Chavez had a rough 9th. How rough? Chavez blew it. He f-in blew it. Jesse Chavez gave up 3 runs in the 9th.

3-1 Angels
Tied game

Pathetic. Absolutely pathetic.

At least only 3 runs meant extra innings instead of a loss, which just meant a loss with extra steps.

The Angels scored a run in the 10th, thanks to a sac fly by Ward.

4-3 Angels!

Now it was up to Jimmy Herget to save the game.

AND HE DID IT! Somehow, the Angels won!

JIMMY!

I know there’s some contingent of fans here that don’t care anymore whether Trout makes it back this season.

But I think it’s important to the team’s morale, especially on the persuasion of Shohei to stay. If Trout can show he will only miss a month+ and come back to finish the season strong, it’s a huge boost for FO and Arte to tell Shohei that Trout is ok, and therefore the team will be ok and has a fighting chance next season.

Well, even though I do want Mike to come back in 2022 and start hitting the ball hard again (if for no other reason to as you say help team morale and build hope for 2023) I have to share with you that it is most likely too late to save Shohei. That ship has pretty much already left the harbor.

Did you see/hear his most recent comments about playing here :

https://calltothepen.com/2022/08/06/shohei-ohtani-keeps-dropping-hints-future-los-angeles-angels/#:~:text=Shohei%20Ohtani%20is%20finding%20it%20difficult%20to%20r

He said among other things that “remaining motivated ” is hard to do now. When I heard this I thought, well, that’s it, he’s gone. I think the only shot to maybe keep him (and I would call it a long shot at this point) is to start really well in 2023. I would say we would need to go like 18-9 in April and then follow that up with 17-11 in May, or something like that. Otherwise he gone.

So, yeah, it would be cool to have Mike come back and play like himself, but I don’t think Shohei is staying either way.

If Shohei dogs the rest of the season because he’s no longer motivated, it will affect his eventual asking price in FA too.

I don’t think he’ll dog anything. In the same interview he said his goal is to play hard everyday and every game. I believe he will. But it is a natural thing when the games mean nothing for the focus to waiver; it is human nature. You have to fight that..:

As much as anything I think this is coded communication. Shohei is basically saying he is not happy with how crappy they are. I really believe that he genuinely likes his teammates and all that, but we already know he really wants to win.

This was another way of saying that.

This is not going to end well: “He’s (Chavez) a veteran guy who’s done this before,” Nevin said. “He’s gonna pitch some big innings late. And really he gets the ground ball there. It just got through.”

Got through? My ass. Chavez jumped out of the way because he was afraid he was going to get hit. No-one was going to catch that ball except for him. Our manager is delusional.

Did he really say this? :

“He’s gonna pitch some big innings late.” 🙄

I mean, you would be hard pressed to find a pitcher who has WORSE stuff than him. With his below average slider and 91 mph “fastball” that does not move, lol.

This is just beyond belief… Maybe Lana was right when she suggested they are trying to lose.

Honestly, Nevin is just here until the end of the year, .would not get worked up over it. I’m good with tanking but beating Seattle any chance they get. Best case, Perry and the entire coaching staff will get jettisoned.

I don’t want to see Montgomery take over cuz Perry will have his back no matter what. That blind dedication will lead to perpetual mediocrity like JeDi and his dear buddy Scott Servais. I feel Minasian and Montgomery have a similar relationship.

While in all likely hood Nevin will not return, at least the Angels should be implementing a developmental plan for this team going forward . Bringing in Jesse Chavez to pitch the ninth is not doing shit for this team now or in the future unless somehow the Angel brass think he’s a productive piece of our 2023 plans . And if they do we’re screwed

Stassi heard O’Hoppe is going to come for his starter job next year and hit one out.

Even if Stassi remains the starting catcher next year, I’d rather a legitimate prospect back him up rather than a washed-up one.

Of course. Suzuki is as good as gone, and O’Hoppe lights a fire under Stassi’s assi. Perry no dum dum.

Even if Stassi has his ass on fire, how much production do you expect given his offensive prowess?

Somewhere in between the low to which he’s fallen and the high he reached after taking an off season focused on improving his hitting. After that improvement, the league took notice and figured him out. Like Walsh. They both need to adjust to the adjustments.

Yes, at this point, I want the Angels to play spoilers to playoff-bound or still fighting for playoff teams. So that when they miss the playoffs, they will go back and say, man, if only we won those games over the Angels…

Just beat Seattle and keep them out of the playoffs. We can peg high on the suck-o-meter only when not playing Seattle.

That Angel lineup last night was HORRIBLE.

Ha ha. Thanks for saying this Cowboy.

I was not on the gamethread last night so I don’t know what was said about the Chavez move, but I was increduous when I saw on my iPhone that he was being brought in for the save… I thought “Really?” Jesse Chavez?

If the Raisel trade gets us Jesse Chavez as a closer there is no point in being a fan anymore…

Clearly Nevin was trying to lose that game. I mean, let Q go out for a 2nd inning if you like, but you DON’T bring in washed up 38 year old Jesse Chavez (he of the 13.50 ERA) to go for the save.

Just pathetic. The Angels (and particularly Nevin) deserved to lose that game.

Yes, it was. But it was also embarrassing for US as we could not hold a 3-0 lead with two outs in the 9th. Nevin should have been gone weeks ago, in fact he never should have been given the job, even on an interim basis.

I guess we will have to wait another two months for his official dismissal.
