LA Angels Tuesday News Crash:

The Angels signed Jonathan Villar, optioned Matt Thaiss, brought up the plumber and designated Tyler Wade for assignment. They continue to set records.

Joey Chestnut won his 15th Nathan’s hot dog eating contest, downing 63 of those puppies in ten minutes. His nearest competitor only managed 43. Miki Sudo won in the women’s division at 40 dogs. In other nut news, Roger Owens is no longer allowed to throw his nuts at you.

Mascots are apparently not to be trifled with.

Not sure why Rengifo/Velazquez is the combo tonight instead of Rengifo/Stefanic. I guess they brought Stefanic up to ride the pine. Again, just squashing development here. Not that it’s surprising. But, geeze

Nothing like coming to an Angels’ fan website to be trolled with two HUGE logos of other teams. You know 2002 with your fake user name to seem like a fan of the team, I guess you just gotta embrace your full bridge troll self, right? This is one of your durmbest posts ever, and that’s saying something.

2002 is obviously a doyer fan that hasn’t accepted the fact that baseball existed BEFORE the Doyers bought out the logo, the latrine and rights to baseball in LA. They even tried to stop the ‘61 expansion. If that was my team, I’d prob be on the opposing team’s site too. I’m sure he likes the attention (negative attention is still attention to some) that he/she doesn’t get on the doyer boards. I usually don’t reply to 2002 thread but we all get hook, line and sinkered eventually

In reference to the strikeout article I would like to say that the hitting coach should be fired and the intermediate head coach should be shown the door also ASAP. I personally don’t see any strikeout as acceptable. The roster also seems to accept failure too easily so let’s get rid of a huge chunk of it and try a new approach.

Not so fast outraged villagers. Apparently our strikeout problem isn’t a result of new found blindness but more the result of constructing a lineup full of chronic whiffers.
Ergo our suckiness should have been expected.

Hello ? Perry are you listening? You built this train wreck. Now the one common thread is the hitting coach(s) So if the Angels believe that the K problem is leading to less run production then maybe they should clean house with their hitting coaches and replace them with a system that cuts down on strikeouts? Maybe there’s robots out there we can acquire to do this instead?

That looks…. 50/50? Actually, they are improved markedly over last year if we look at our top AB guys? Why am I outraged?

I’d say so…. though plenty of players from the spot we picked him don’t pan out. It’s not like he was a top 5 pick or something. And this isn’t football or basketball, where first rounders are always supposed to produce or it’s a huge problem. He’s no Mickey Moniak.

Actually, when I look at that draft, I guess he still gets a little time. There are some guys from that first round who are at the Nick Senzel, Kyle Lewis, Dylan Carlson level of MLB goodness…. remember how we were all supposed to weep for not having drafted Dakota Hudson? I’d say the best player from this 1st round id Will Smith…. maybe Eric Lauer?

The main bust with Thaiss is that he was supposed to address our very lame offense in 2016 quickly…. he totally didn’t do that.

Willson Contreras is the “Hot” must have in trade discussions, Cubs will score in trading him. Kumar Rocker in this year’s draft and he is getting attention, but he is injury prone and a “Head Case”. With the Angels luck they draft him, and we miss out on a SS.

This morning on MLB-TV they showed a graft that shows that the way the league is getting Trout out is fastball up and fastball up and in. He can’t hit the ball because of the way he has an upward swing, launch angle. Kryptonite has been found to use on Trouty. Against Houston 0 for 11, 9 strikeouts. High Heat is the way to shut him down.

Great players find a way to adjust. I have confidence that Trout will.

Trout has always complained he does not see the ball in Houston. Surprised he didn’t get a rest day during that series.

Is Thaiss back at Catcher? I would give him a shot in the lineup over one of those 2 considering how poor our catchers have been playing.

Yah. I’d try him out. He’s just about to the point where they are gonna need to cut him loose or put him to use. They can’t keep protecting him in the Rule 5 much longer and he’s just about at 6 full MiLB seasons.

Defensively, he’s awful. Went to the AAA game the other night when he was behind the plate. Multiple passed balls/wild pitches. Allowed four stolen bases. I’d rather see Wallach

All I know is that if Arte cared about winning and had a POBO then we’d have one of the six catchers in baseball that can field AND hit.

Actually, if we just had a POBO said catcher would probably pitch too.

Fansince1971

Well it’s obviously speculation – but your sarcasm aside – I think the odds that the team would be more balanced and have more continuity (as well as having a better farm and better player development) would be higher with a team of baseball people making the decisions together with a POBO rather than marketing dudes like Arte, Carpino and Kuhl.

Baseball is about increasing the odds of success. Focusing on marketing may increase the odds of higher sales but it does not increase the odds of fielding better players, scouting, player development and having a better farm.

I’m curious how many baseball decisions Arte KuhlPino have made over the last two years….

Fansince1971
Legend

Right – we won’t know. But I presume that they had a lot to do with Rendon, Pujols, Upton and other choices that could be justified from a marketing standpoint but maybe not a baseball operations standpoint.

Beyond that – I suspect Arte sets the budget (no duh) and influences player/personnel decisions in that manner.

I also believe it was Arte and his gang that were making marketing based cuts to address the huge contracts and their impact on the bottom line. That impacted minor league housing and nutrition, scouting, player development etc. I don’t think that happens under the watch of an experienced POBO.

POBO or not we will likely still sign a LF when we need one (especially if it get’s Pujols out from behind Trout in the order), we will probably sign a star 3B if we need it and can get one, and we’ll probably sign a star 1B if we need a 1B and can get one.

Who ever our owner is, he will probably set a budget (WoTF wouldn’t?)

Hell, even if we have a POBO Arte’ll do stupid shit like cut farm related stuff…. although, again, he’s done that the last couple years? Everything I’ve read has them expanding this area, either via the new CBA or willingly.

It’s like I’ve always said, Arte’s pretty much in the upper level of the pink/brown blob of baseball ownership…. and I want him to sell to a real oligarch so we can see what actual crap ownership looks like…. or a Saudi prince….. either way this site deserves to see true crap.

Fansince1971

I don’t know but I would think that a POBO that had actual control and ran baseball operations would discuss his budget with Arte and might (when told what it was and having massive numbers to Pujols and Trout) hesitate to sign Upton and Rendon to massive deals because this mythical POBO would understand that he/she’s had to construct a whole team of players and having so much money tied up in a few players (with the budget that existed) did not make any business or baseball sense.

So he/she might have said to Arte – if you want Rendon, then I’m going to need at least a $40 m per year higher budget. Those forward looking conversations are what a good POBO does to ensure that handing out another big contract does t handicap the team.

I think Arte is a perfectly fine owner and businessman with a marketing- centric mindset. I do not think he’s a baseball guy who makes good, team based decisions.

He sees.a player he wants – he will spend a LOT for that player. But then tries to make it up by cutting here and there and keeping a fixed budget. I think a strong POBO would have a lot to say about that.

His stats look fine to me: Caught stealing % (higher than Suzuki); 365 OBP / 800+ OPS; and 2 passed balls for the season. Maybe you just caught him on a bad night?

Passed balls vs. wild pitches are often ruled incorrectly in favor of the catcher. Trust me, he’s a PB/WP waiting to happen back there. He’s basically Jonathan Lucroy

Angels are exactly as I predicted.

Finish a third or fourth place team.

Maybe 5 over but probably 5 under.

Just being real and here’s a solution.

If Arte wont field a winner…SELL IT!!!

Arte is dying to field a winner, he’s just not capable of doing it. This franchise is his toy to play with so he’s never gonna hire a baseball Ops executive, clean out his own team President etc. to really reboot the franchise philosophically and get different results.

He will continue to hire first time GMs on the cheap, overspend on guys who had epic postseasons elsewhere and tell his scouts and minor leaguers they aren’t worth the bare minimum.

I dont think first time GMs are the problem. It’s the supporting cast, the culture, and the lack of development.

Arte doesn’t invest in the farm in regards to decent living. The culture comes from the top. Perry and anyone else can only do so much to work within the constraints.
