Anthony Rendon has season ending wrist surgery

Just as he got back, Anthony Rendon is out for the season with wrist surgery.

DOOOM

It is yet another lost season for the man who was formerly known as “Tony 2 Bags”. His newest nickname, “Tony 10 Day”, is here to stay, sadly. As yet another Arte Moreno signing gone wrong, it really seems like the Angels never learn their lesson.

Anthony Rendon still has 4 years and $154.3M left on his deal. He has yet to even play 162 games with the team. Over his 3 seasons, he has slashed .252/.359/.421 for an OPS of .780 and an OPS+ of 117. He has been worth 3.1 BWAR in his 155 games played for the Halos.

Maybe his surgery goes great and he has a full MVP like 2023 season. But it is just as likely that he is just never the player that anyone hoped for following his signing. At least it isn’t as bad as the Stephen Strasburg deal… right?

Literally every single time he starts to put things together, he goes back to the disabled list.

Assuming Arte ends up saving money on this because of some insurance coverage, maybe invest it in your nationally recognized worst-in-the-league minor league operation?

Hire better scouts. Invest in food and housing support. Invest in the future so we can actually develop players and stop overpaying 30 year olds who had memorable postseasons for other teams.

Seems like we need to make a run at some middle infielders – our prospects aren’t close enough and our depth there is more AAAA than MLB ready.

But who? These seem like positions where people are washing out (Dee Gordon, Andujar?), or teams playing aging veterans who no longer have star power (Whit Merrifield, Elvis Andrus) – because there aren’t options out there.

Could we get Miami to trade Rojas or Chisolm (could we afford either)? Or McMahon or Rogers from Colorado?

Arte is probably not sweating this at all. He most likely has an insurance policy that covers the dead money until Rendon shows up to camp next spring.

7-year $245 Million contract basically up in smoke to a player that is 32 years old and is already on the downward slide. Have never been impressed with Rendon which was a horrible signing that the Angels are no strangers to. Arte Moreno and Perry Minasian are fvckn idiots.

Hopefully another episode soon of the “Terry and Perry Show” so that Perry can elaborate in the radio booth about RenDone…………

Why is anybody surprised by this? The misinformation is unbelievable, the other day it was “we’re just gonna have to manage this, it’s going to be a day to day situation” Now season ending surgery? This is on Mr. Moreno, Artie was the one who had the man crush on Anthony and just like Albert, Hamilton and CJ Wilson and those moves went belly up. This is not just bad luck or some kind of silly curse it’s bad decision making through and through. Not blaming the GM’s or Rendon, this is on the man who truly believes he’s a baseball guy and he is not.

So you knew, in Dec of 2019, that this is how Rendon’s luck was gonna go? Based on what future boy?

And do you have any stock tips for me while everything is “on sale”?

Ronald Acuna’s last game for the Braves in 2021 was June 15, 2021. The Braves went on to trade for Outfielders Joc Pederson on July 15th, Outfielders Eddie Rosario, Adam Duvall and Jorge Solar as well as relief pitcher Richard Rodriguez on July 30, 2021 all of which ended up contributing to their World Championship.

Anthony Rendon’s last game for the Angels in 2022 was June 14, 2022. So Come on Perry get busy and start working the phones. it aint over til its over.

Why the hate on Rendon? He seems like a quality guy to me. Should we Donnie Moore him because he doesn’t produce WAR numbers like Trout for us? Trout is great and all, but there’s still room for improvement. Anyway here are the same links no one clicked on yesterday about Rendon as an actual person:

I don’t hate Rendon. I do hate his contract and the fact that he has not done anything close to justifying it

approximately 1 season (155 games in his Angels career) with an OPS about the same as Dusty Baker’s career, or Julio Franco. 20 HRs, 89 RBIs. Would we be ok with that every year? I think so. But, as we all note, we don’t get a full year.

Bro, ANGELS2020CHAMPS, that was harsh using Donnie Moore as an adjective.

Man, I’ll never forget the Dave Henderson homer that forced another playoff game, which we lost.

Ah, Man, That was brutal.

And, it cost Donnie Moore his life…

It might have been harsh, but some of the hate for Rendon her is in that vein, like he purposefully dogs it just to take the money. All by a bunch of “experts” who have determined Rendon does not have enough “grit” and “fire”. It’s just like the hate for Wells, who from all the comments about him he must have held a gun to Arte’s head and said “trade for me since you missed out on Carl Crawford”. Read the comments below, you’ll see. It wouldn’t surprise me ine bit to see some CTPG posts cheering Rendon if he went Donnie Moore.

I’ve kept some expectations until now, but where can I find the application forms to officially enter the RENDONE camp?

Let’s hope this does it.

No more big contracts. We’ve got Trout. Let Ohtani leave. Any future guys we develop, trade them at age 28. Don’t sign any expensive free agents. No pitchers this winter. No big FA short stop. Let Iglesias play out his contract and then no expensive pen arms. Or hell, trade him too.

I want a 200M farm system & player development program…. and Trout.

I want our best player to be a guy like Whit Merrifield. I want all our best arms to be future arms. I want to draft in the top five.

Please Arte. End everyone’s suffering and don’t sign any free agents. Let this team become the Baltimore Orioles of the West. Everyone will be glad you learned your lesson as they watch our version of Trey Mancini year after year after year. If you don’t sink costs then no more sunk costs. Do it Arte. I want to see a 90M payroll. Let’s do it!!!

The thing is, is you don’t have a excuse or answer for that other team across town and that team in south TX who somehow managed to keep on crapping out prospects like pigeons in the park. We have the worst farm system in MLB since 2010 and these two teams have lost more talent than a All Star team since 2017……

We’re at a crossroads here. Josh Donaldson has been able to stick at 3B still at his age, but Rendon looks increasingly fragile. So does that mean Rendon has to move to 1B? Then Walsh needs to move into the OF. That means though, Trout – Marsh – Walsh – Ward – Adell is 2 over. Someone will need to get traded to accommodate this, plus find a 3B. The future IF is supposed to be Jeremiah Jackson and Kyren Paris. Plus Fletcher is under contract. Or maybe we can just put Kevin Maitin at 3B, he’s going to be a huge offensive star, full of talent.

Time to start getting Jeremiah Jackson some reps at third. He has the arm and agility for it, and he seems to be adapting well to AA.

Not a RenDone related question.
Any thoughts about the MLB Draft Combine? 🤔
What are the strengths and weaknesses of this year’s (I bet the weaknesses are all positions that this team badly needs!!) draft?
 😫 😭 😢

Kind of a weak draft class, certainly on the college pitching side, and it doesn’t help the Angels that they lost their second rounder to acquire Syndegaard. They can probably get themselves a decent college hitter in round one, ideally with some power upside, because there’s little of that in the system right now.

Unfortunately a lot of the college hitters available around pick 13 will be guys with power, but a lot of swing and miss… guys who will make Thaiss look like a lock.

Honestly, in this draft, I am not gonna be all that upset if they take some guy over slot that I don’t expect or take a college arm I’m not in love with. There are plenty of guys who could turn out to be good, but not many where I feel like I can see how they will develop like Detmers.

The K rate is a little intense, and he may need some swing refinement, but definitely a legit prospect. Still think he’s three years away.

No, Vera and Paris have both been struggling at their levels. I don’t see any player not named Jackson that looks likely to challenge for a regular MLB middle infield spot before 2024.

Quero, Guzman and Blakely have been the interesting names stateside among position players thus far.

Which means we should be looking at the trade market for middle infielders – as our needs are outpacing the progress of our prospects.

Do we have enough pieces from our pitching prospects to poach 1-2 MLB caliber middle infielders from the Marlins, Royals, Orioles (someone who isn’t competing right now)?

Personally, I wouldn’t trade from our pitching pipeline right now. The rare surplus building at AA/A+ is something the Angels haven’t had in a decade, and is one of the few bright spots in an otherwise troubling system.

Going back to Eppler-style 4:1 pitcher swaps in the hopes that a middle infielder nets the team five wins to secure a third WC spot just seems like farce. The Angels are going to have to replace guys like Syndergaard as soon as next season, and the team typically has to overpay for pitching. They have an opportunity to do that in-house for league minimum salaries if they don’t get impatient and harvest their green shoots before they’re mature.

Sign Troy Glaus. At his age he would be a major improvement over any of those infielders besides Walsh.

I’m known around here as the Rendon guy, and taken taken a lot of crap for a long time for pointing what has now become obvious about Rendon. I take no joy in being right about it because we now have a starting infield of Rengifo, Velasquez, and Duffy. Rendon is officially a sunk cost. I wonder if Minasian is planning to go with this the rest of the year.
