LA Angels Thursday News Crash: Heading to Oakland

The Angels are heading to Oakland. They apparently got away from the Guardians not a moment too soon. Those guys have a major COVID situation going on. Jake Marisnick will have to get thumb surgery. Oh well. The article mentions that Marisnick has not batted as well as he used to in 2017. As if on cue Jim Crane, who owns the Astros, says the Yankees cheated too.

Joe Maddon listed Anthony Rendon as a switch hitter on the lineup card yesterday. Now if only Thor will throw a no-hitter for us. Are the Angels for real? Just how real are they? They are even pulling for each other. Mike Trout gave a big congratulations to Reid Detmers.

Christian Yelich doesn’t always hit for the cycle, but when he does he does it against the Reds. Oops! The ball stayed fair for Joc Pederson.

Do you think they should build a permanent ball park at the Field of Dreams site?

Angels are now in second place and the Astros have won 10 in a row. I doubt the Angels will accomplish that feat and have to win against last place Oakland. No excuses.

Silseth up this early tells me one thing strait out, Perry is not a cowardly platypus. Also, I get the sense that Joe Maddon’s been made to understand his job’s safe. That’s based on nothing but my little brain’s hiss and spark, but the guy is REALLY open to trying out a lot of stuff for someone who is afraid he’ll not have a contract soon.

Let’s hope not. Call me crazy but maybe — maybe — a team that has underperformed for as long as we have should hold out for more than a shiny record on May 13th to commit to a guy who until 3 weeks ago perhaps looked like part of the problem.

But it would be in line with how impulsive the Angels are. We did pick up Eppler’s option early in the year and fire him at the end of it after all.

Joe can stick around if we make the playoffs. I don’t see how you can reward 3 failed seasons with more rope.

Why isn’t Diaz starting? I certainly think his performance earned another look.

FYI. I think because of the new CBA player option rules the Angels would normally have to wait 15 days until May 21 before they could bring him back up since he was optioned after his last start on May 6. However with the double header, the Angels are allowed to bring him back early for both double header games without penalty. But, short of an injury Diaz will be sent back to the Great Salt Lake sometime after Saturday’s game(s)

Nah. They aren’t trading him till he’s close to being out of options. The only thing he costs us right now is time and frustration. But best outcome wise we get a 15-30M a year outfielder pre-arb out of it if he just learns to be average with the glove. It’s not even a gamble yet unless someone out there wants to trade us an established starter and he’s part of the ask.

Are any of our resident “Debbie Downers” from NY? I wondered if one of them might have written it.

I’m offended. Debbie Downer is way too close to Downing.

Should be Team D&G … short for Team Doom & Gloom.

One fellow insists his pessimism is him being pragmatic. Good for him.

Trust me – I’m one of the doom and gloomers also but suddenly find myself being a full-blown Pollyanna (or GPB) when facing the depth of doom & gloom expelled from the orifii of Team D&G.

I ignored it for two reasons:

  1. It’s the NY Daily News
  2. “The Los Angeles Angels of Orange County of Anaheim”.

Joe Maddon can do whatever he wants with lineups and in-game decisions. But as an Angels organization veteran, if he doesn’t connect this cowboy hat wearing goofiness to Gene Autry in some way, he should be fired.

Are you still angry that Mike Trout took most of a game off last night? Well put down the tube of liquid yogurt, lock the spout on your box of pink wine, clean the mascara off your cheeks and get over it cause Trout wanted that off day.

Are you angry that Taylor Ward also didn’t play last night? Well, ol’ Tay Tay would like to invite you to f*** right off. He hasn’t forgotten about the last five years, he has seen many of your ideas, just doesn’t see you as a real MLB mind, and he feels that you can suck it.

We’re also apparently starting a AA pitcher (Silseth) from last years draft by our moron child GM who did not go to MIT and is a clueless puppet of the Oligarch.

Things have changed around here, we’ve already forgot the last shitty decade +. Exciting Times at CTPG, winning baseball great start to the season, young stud prospects called up from AA to start, because we think he is good, passionate Angel fans willing to glue themselves to something in protest of Soggy Joe’s get away day lineup decisions.

Good times! And yesterday we heard about a possible scheduled 15 round Heavy Weight fight between JackFrost and Grandpabaseball. All to prove which Angel fan has the most grit.

Dude, you’re suggesting that you are capable of determining what a real MLB mind is?

Based on the quality of your posts, you have as much baseball acumen as a piece of turd on the side of the road.

Oh wow. Sick burn. Not even a full turd? A piece of a turd? And you used terms like “capable of determining” and “acumen”. Good job big guy. So serious. So Olberman. Such a laborious and vascular rebuttal of a vertiginously extempore scribble! A truly heroic defense of the mole hill.

And yes. I do determine who has a real MLB mind, with the help of my pal Taylor Ward, because I am much smarter than you. It’s not even close. Just look how seriously you’re taking this.

Yes there are always exceptions. C-Rod had been in the minor league system for a while though. C-Rod did make a big jump though unless you count 2020 as a AA/AAA since there were no minor leagues. Not saying Silseth can’t succeed but those jumps are rare for a reason. Dude does have good stuff.

I’ll be honest, I’m a little dubious of this. Doesn’t this mean we have to add him to the 40-man? And you can’t take him off again without risking him? Or do I have the rules wrong.

Twebur

DefinitionThe 40-man roster includes a combination of players on the 26-man roster, the 7-, 10-, and 15-day injured lists, the bereavement/family medical emergency list and the paternity leave list, as well as some Minor Leaguers.
In order for a club to add a player to the 26-man roster, the player must be on the 40-man roster. If a club with a full 40-man roster wishes to promote a Minor League player that is not on the 40-man roster, it must first remove a player from the 40-man roster — either by designating a player’s contract for assignment, trading a player, releasing a player or transferring a player to the 60-day injured list.

So my concern is that do they need to keep him on the 40-man from now on, or risk losing him somehow if they want to take him off.

Looking at our 40 man roster, we have some wiggle room…few guys on it i don’t think we’d be horrified to lose. I’m trusting Perry…..happy to say that.

He would cost Adell and some prospects. But, with the emergence of Ward, there might not be a long term spot for all three of our ‘young’ OF – so it might make sense to stabilize the 2B spot until Jackson/Paris/Vera move up (and in case Fletcher can’t return to form).

Unless he is replacing a COVID stricken IL player already on the 26 man roster, the Angels would risk subjecting him to waivers if they wanted to remove him from the 40 man at a later date.

I’ll bet you Mike Trout preferred to take off Wednesday’s game at the Big A versus tomorrows game at the Oakland Mausoleum. After the incident in Texas, its obvious to me that MNT hates late afternoon games due to the intruding shadows since he dives over the plate and doesn’t pick up the ball well in those conditions. If you recall he got really pissed the other night (The maddest I’ve ever seen him) when his exposed but now padded hand almost get hit on a runaway inside pitch.

So it may not have even been Soggy Joe’s call.

Great point Cowboy. And if you are right (I think there is a good chance you are), then much of the criticism directed at Joe is misguided and ignorant.

Even if you are not right it is still misguided and ignorant, ha ha! 😉

Just read on Rotoworld that Elvis was optioned to AAA. It did not say who took his place on the roster.

MarineLayer

There are several factors at play here:

  1. The usual injuries both nagging and IL types are piling up.
  2. We have a roster lacking in depth, including weaknesses at several starting positions.
  3. Joe Maddon is just plain weird.

In my opinion, even if we had a more conventional manager, we will just be hurting any time any of Trout, Ohtani, Ward, and Walsh are out of the lineup.

The sin last night was resting Trout while Walsh was fighting a nagging injury. Mike is hot, so just put him in the lineup.

We must add depth, both pitching and hitting. It’s a long season and we’re not going to be able to seriously compete without it. Last night shows you why.

Jo Adell is now 7 for 15 at Salt Lake City. That’s a .467 average with a 1.933 OPS. All 7 of his hits have been for extra bases, 4 doubles and 3 homeruns. He’s also walked more than he’s struck out, 5 walks, 4 Ks.
