Angels just can’t beat Baltimore. Fall 5-4

Noah Syndergaard faced off against Spenser Watkins of the Orioles tonight. Things weren’t going great until a couple of Mike Trout home runs tied the game. Who the heck is this Mike Trout guy? That sounds made up.

The Angels did go ahead on a 2 run homer by Brandon Marsh in that same inning.

That didn’t matter because Ryan Tepera gave away the go ahead run in the top of the 7th to make it 5 -4 Orioles.,

Ohtani was stranded at second in the bottom half of the 7th. Another two runners stranded in the 8th inning and it looked bleak.

Ohtani took a 3-0 pitch four inches off the plate for a strike, Trout singled with 2 outs to extend the game. But it should’ve been 2 on 1 out. Rendon hit a grounder to end it.

I’d swap Ohtani and Marsh in the lineup today

Beautiful day for a ballgame, a day game at the Big A is fun as the ball will travel out fairly easy especially if there is a breeze.

We have at least 3 families from CTPG attending, and one will be enjoying the ice cream treats with his kids. Sounds like a good and messy memory enjoying time. You scream, I scream for ice cream.

Better to be lucky than good as the saying goes, and boy did I get lucky with calling on Trouty and Marsh would hit Homeruns prior to the contest. “Let’s do it again” (Beach Boys 1968) and this time I’ll go with Shohei and Ward.

It seems that some do not care for this part but here it goes anyway, not only do we win, but win in a high scoring game say about 10 – 8. So the O’s can put the brooms back in the closet.

See you a little later on the game blog, have a fun day.

To call that loss soul-crushing does not do justice to that word. This is freaking Baltimore. Other than Snydergard and Trout, total team fail. And Thor needs to deal with the SB problem. Physical error by RenDone and mental errors on throws by Marsh and Ward were part of it. Relief pitching not fixed. Madden decision making suspect. Bad umping also contributed. This team has .500 written all over it, unless the injury bug strikes again.

“Bad umping” had a huge part in that game/loss. Of course it does in most games where it crops up. Agree about relief pitching not being fixed. We need more depth and better middle inning options. Maddon made a very good decision to bring in Loup in 5th to snuff out that threat. He would have been out of 6th with no damage had it not been for error by Rendone.

Just a point on Maddon; it makes zero sense to blame Maddon for bullpen moves when the pitcher fails if you correspondingly do not give him credit for his bullpen moves when the reliever performs well. Yet almost nobody does this. People give the PITCHER credit when he pitches well and blame Maddon when the pitcher does poorly. Again, this logically inconsistent, makes no sense whatsoever, and it very unfair to the manager.

Soul crushing? That alot of hyperbole ML. If this loss is soul crushing then we might as well pack it all in right now.

Baltimore is not a bad team at least their pitching staff isn’t bad at all. Every pitcher we have faced this series seems to have legit stuff. Last night was a close ball game. We’re are going to have a lot of those in our future We have to play better if we want to be a winning ball club and I think every player on this roster knows that. But to blame Maddon for last nights loss is absurd. I thought he pushed all the right buttons but unacceptable errors and rookie mistakes ( as well as documented inherent weaknesses like Thors ability to hold runners) doomed us. If we are to be a winning ball club how we respond to last nights loss will have everything to do with our success this season.

It’s easy to get super negative after a loss like that. But look at the bright side- Marsh looks like he could be an All-Star and compete for ROY. If he continues to play like this, the long term outlook for this season looks really good. Stay calm and carry on.

I know he still feels like a rookie but Brandon exceeded the ROY award limits last year so that’s one award he definitely won’t win this year

Yeah, but anyone here has been part of this group for awhile. It’s a loss that doesn’t impact out personal lives. No need to be assholes to eachother.

You seem to have ignored what I said/wrote. Being a fan is not a rational undertaking. I will not repeat the definition of “fan” since it has been giving many times. In short, it is the root of a longer word.

Terrible loss. Worst loss of the season so far imo. So many wasted opportunities. Although I do love seeing Trout round into form. And Marsh looks like the real deal.

Exactly. The team is still really glitchy. Gotta remember we had 2020. Then a year where most of these guys were hurt. Then a short Spring Training.

I’m not saying everything will be wonderful, but the teams doing pretty well for a team that isn’t doing very well. I think the offense, defense, pitching all look good, then have lapses. Ohtani looks like crap as does Rendon, Walsh and Stassi. Bullpen’s not consistent at all. Even Maddon is really all over the place. But I think a lot of that stuff will smooth out somewhat. The team’s definitely got more pitching than in the past and will probably be fairly competitive in the long run. Hell, they’re fairly competitive now while being a mess.

Unfortunately we don’t have the Top 3 SP’s in MLB and that’s the problem.
Only one guy has one 10 or more games since Jered Weaver left (Jaime Barria went 10-9). We never got a SS, sorry, but were not a post season caliber team yet.

Ohtani leading off with another 2 strikeouts (22 for the season after only 15 games) and batting just .206 doesn’t appear to be working..

Ohtani’s on base % is .265. That’s a problem. Why the hell is he leading off in the lineup?? 40+ years ago Pete Rose batted first and he NEVER had an on base % that low. I’m old enough to remember that..

JackFrost

Reply to  Chap24

I don’t think it is about being “cute.” There are logical reasons to bat him first, including the fact that you want your biggest threat with the bat to get the most AB’s possible. Batting him first does that. It also allows Trout to protect him in the lineup, who is the best person to do that. Also, when Shohei gets on he is a big threat to steal so it immediately puts speed on the bases and extra pressure on the opposing starter. So, it is not stupid

All that said, it is true that Shohei has been struggling. I said before the season started that we all should not expect the same offensive numbers from Ohtani. Clearly, he will not be hitting 46 HR’s again or slugging near what he did last year.

Because he has been struggling so bad (he has only 4 hits in his last 24 AB’s) I do think it is time to move him in the order. My preference at least for now would be to do this against right handed starters :

1) Marsh
2) Trout
3) Ohtani
4) Walsh
5) Taylor
6) Rendone
7) Stassi
8) Wade
9) Velazques/Fletcher

In addition, I think a day or two off would benefit Shohei. I know he won’t ask for it (as most players would not do that) but it should be gently pushed. He just has such a hectic and tiring routine and he will need it from time to time this year.

Really? Okay , here is a thought experiment. Even if you knew by predicting an Angels win it would bring about a loss, you would still rather predict a win and have them lose??

I mean, what is so great about saying “the Angels are gonna win tonight!” BET THE FARM!!

You always predict a win anyways so why even tell us? We all know what your thoughts are on the matter. You feel the Angels will win every single game. We all know that . Why even write it here???

We can’t go on developing walk-ons and 3 & 2 star players.
Danny Rudy Ruettiger type (Yes David Fletcher) make for nice Disney Movie subjects, but not real world winners. We have to have thoroughbred level players (especially SS, 3B,and SP).

Well back to the drawing board. I just arrived home and returning home from a huge surprise Birthday Party and being extremely happy and in great spirits and find out that we choked.

OK Bradlee do your depressed posts, and DD I guess I qualify as “that guy” and all the rest of you that feel the let down post how you feel. Tonight I feel the same but even more so as the good feelings party was about turning 70 as it was for me. I can only justify that Thor won’t win them all and that maybe this is a 81-81 team after all.

Fungo Ale maybe on to something good when he points to Joe and adds he must go. I am more surprised than most that I was so confident that we would win this game at home. Our best pitcher, playing at home, Trout back in the lineup, and the beat goes on.

There is always tomorrow to just one win in this series. After tanking for so many years the Orioles are the real deal after all.

Well as Jack Frost suggested maybe it’s time to cool it and put the train in the roundhouse. No more optimistic calls for a bit until Robo Bot dances, nah can’t do that but I will not become negative about the team except maybe about Joe.

Have a good night and see you tomorrow.

Dang Angels.

Lol. Yeah, it is all Joe. When the relief pitchers perform well it is because they are clutch, they’re great.

But when they fail it is all Joe’s fault. That sounds logical to me.

You make no sense at all as usual. You know your attacks are wearing old and you and some others seem only happy when you can put someone down. You really need to cool your jets and come up with a new act. By the way, did I blame Joe Maddon for tonight’s lose? If not, then why put those two together?
