Angels 0 Padres 2
Twas a beautiful day for baseball, and all through Tempe, not a Trout was stirring (nor a Pujols, Ohtani, Fletcher, etc. as well). Today’s early game brought us a mostly B squad lineup as the Angels prepare to play in Anaheim tomorrow night. Despite that, some regulars were there, such as Justin Upton, Jose Rojas (who just made the team), and Dexter Fowler.
If it was excitement you were after, this was certainly not the game for you. The Angels only mustered 1 hit (a Justin Upton double), and the Padres didn’t fare much better (until Alex Claudio entered the game). Brandon Marsh got hit by a pitch, then picked off. He later made this fun catch in the outfield:
Jaime Barria and Aaron Slegers had scoreless outings for the Halos while Junior Guerra had his ERA ruined by flame throwing Alex Claudio and and poorly timed Padres double.
Blake Snell, who hasn’t allowed a Spring Training run, was dominate. Only 3 Angels batters reached based through Snell’s 5 innings and 2 of them were Brandon Marsh (HBP, BB). Brandon Marsh also hit a single in the bottom of the 7th, which made him 3 of the 4 Angels base runners in this entire game.
Remember when I said not much happened in this game? That’s mostly true – but I leave you with this amazing catch by Jo Adell in the 7th.
Buttrey optioned, does not shock me a bit.
Reds release Noe Ramirez. And the Angels are bringing him back. Geeeez Us Cryst. Typical garbage move. Not impressed with Joe Perry at all.
I like Noe. I think he’d be better than Claudio, to name one.
On a Minor league deal? whats not to like? With this move as well as acquiring Ramos and stashing Jake Faria at the alternate site the Angels are quietly building some bullpen depth with possibly more moves to come.
I like how all these guys get optioned to Salt Lake but show up in the lineup
my favorite part of Adell’s catch is the apparent bond between him and Marsh. And I wonder, on Marsh’s catch, was he posing for Adell? It’s not clear. But I did love Marsh helping Adell up and the two hugging.
The direction and expression of Marsh absolutely looked so.
Future is bright in the OF department.(while doomed, you know where.)
Cubs just released Maybin and I’d rather have him than Fowler
We already have better players than Fowler that are deserving of playing time (maybe even Adell).
I’d almost rather have searing abdominal cramps than Fowler. Almost.
Well Apparently with Fowler we get both.

Now we just need a flare up.
Mark Canha resigned for $6.9M with Oakland while we signed Scott Schleber.
Canha is a better fielder and probably hits for more power too. Come on Perry you can do better than that!!! Don’t be as feckless as your predecessor or you’ll end up working for Walmart in Missouri. Outfielders aren’t that hard to find as opposed to a All Star SS,3B,or 20 game winning pitcher, why do you think our past GM was always drafting them and overpaid for a LF?
Which is 7 times more than Schebler will make and 14 times more than Adell will make when they are called up? No Thanks
You CANHAve Mark.
$6.8m in a lot for a 4th outfielder playing behind Fowler
Nobody outcheaps those green & gold guys and still manage to stay competitive…….BTW how overpaid is our LF? Schebler sucks defensively like Greg Luzinski in Philly 40 yrs ago.
Pathetic offense except Upton and Marsh.
Jo Adell catching that was very encouraging.
It seems hard to justify giving Fowler a spot (let alone a starting spot) when he is hitting only half as well as Adell, and is fielding no better than Adell at his most criticized.
This is why the Angels are still the Angels. Arte doesn’t know what a sunk cost is. He’s going to give Fowler every chance to earn that million bucks he’s paying him because he used to be good 4 or 5 years ago. It’s sad. Angels have some of the top talent in the league and should do much better than they have but they are unwilling to play people based on performance which is why they’ve also had some of the worst performances that just counterbalance their top end talent. Finally last year, they are out of the playoff picture, and start playing guys based on performance a bit more and they had their best month of the year. Too bad we have to wait until June for that to happen with the Angels. You can’t sacrifice two months of the season to “figure things out” when other teams are constantly trying to cycle through their players that are performing.
Josh Hamilton: of Course the Angels don’t know what a sunk cost is
Not a high bar there, for Adell.
We Still Suck!
But our offense this time!
It’s always Something !
