I hate to say it but it looks like our team talent level is about on par with the Mariners. I don’t think that bodes well for our results this year.

I could not disagree more. We put in two historically awful pitchers for no apparent reason tonight and they let the Mariners do whatever they wanted on offense. Outside of those terrible performances, the Angels looked far and away to be the better team.

I still believe offensively that this team is near the top of the AL. Maddon needs to learn how to manage his pitching staff though.

Well, most of the damage can be sourced to the pen thusfar. You should be able to win a game against the Mariners with a seven run lead.

If the Angels rode Heaney through seven, they probably would have had a 7-3 lead with Buttrey up in the eighth.

Joe out-thunk the game, undercut his #1 starter, and it did the team no favors.

I’m still baffled by the pitching decisions tonight.

I have a sneaking feeling Ward is inexperienced at first base

He has experience at C-1b, 2b, 3b, LF, RF because he can play those positions. lt has always been his bat that can hold him back.

They’ll call up that clown they got on waivers from the Mets earlier this month. He cleared waivers when the Angels outrighted him so you know he must fit right in.

Say Trout leaves soon for the birth of his son and after taking some time away, the Angels are like 10-19. Why come back if that scenario is present. Wouldn’t it be prudent to just stay at home and not risk getting Covid with a newborn at home and the Angels waiting another year for Eppler’s plan to kick in to gear.

I mean we all know by not the real problem is Arte. No GM is like yea let me trade my 1st round pick so that I can get a guy off my roster. Arte makes the big decisions about who to sign and makes it really hard to then blame the GM. If Arte spends his load one one player it’s not really Eppler’s fault that he has to resort to the scrap heap.

I don’t think it’s any one move like that as much as the fact that Arte wouldn’t let us tank for a couple years to do a full rebuild. We basically prolonged the inevitable by pretending we were close to contention. And even now we have a relatively mediocre farm system for how bad we’ve been.

Arte don’t two shits about the farm. He gutted it, and fired all of the scouts, twice.

especially when we didn’t sign anyone of note from Latin America when there were no restrictions.

I don’t think that’s true because we screwed ourselves with the Baldoquin deal. We basically couldn’t sign anyone for over 300K for a long time.

And then we released him before his contract was completed. This organization has no morals

eyespy idk what you’re talking about? He got his full signing bonus and was making minor league pay. It’s not like he earned his way to the majors.

They kept him around for some unknown reason then, released this past Spring

Angels have been free of the Baldoquin restrictions since 2018. It was a three year cap.

Last I counted, 14 teams got stuck with those restrictions during that CBA, so it wasn’t all that unusual.

Maybe, but the Angels released him this past Spring, so I’m guessing that he was signed through the 2020 season.

right before Baldoquin there were no restrictions and the Angels were SILENT. Lots of teams going all out on IFA and the Angels just sitting on the sidelines.

Arte largely dissolved the Latin program after the skimming scandals. Baldoquin we acquired a mere two years into resuscitating the program, and came at a time when the market was irrational and overheated.

Still, guys like Barría, Suárez and Hector Yan were drafted in that period. They found value in cheap scraps.

To be fair, most of the big dollar Latin signs don’t work out. Many of the biggest hits are guys that signed for <1M.

The teams that have had the biggest success on the intl front have tended to opt for volume, and developed their players. Vlad Jr type payouts are relatively rare.

What Joe is teaching his pitchers is that they have to be perfect and be pulled. Or absolutely suck. No in between
