Angels at A’s 07/27/2020 Gamethread

Although there is bigger news across baseball, namely that two games are canceled today because there was an “outbreak” of COVID-19 cases on the Marlins, the baseball game in Oakland will proceed. If this is indeed the last game of the season we get, well…hopefully it’s worthwhile.

Angels Lineup: Fletcher 5, Trout 8, Ohtani 10, Upton 7, La Stella 4, Pujols 3, Castro 2, Simmons 6, Goodwin 9, Canning SP

A’s Lineup: Semien 6, Laureano 8, Chapman 5, Olson 3, Canha 7, Davis 10, Piscotty 9, Murphy 2, Kemp 4, Bassitt SP

I’ve worried about this team’s culture ever since Pujols got here and then especially after Hunter and then Weaver left.

For this game I am stuck with the A’s feed and mlb doesn’t provide pre or post game but I really would like to know what he said

Yikes. Rough way to open the year. And now we’re likely without Simmons for a bit.

Fletch to short, la Stella 2nd, Thaiss/ward third? The defensive lineup is manageable but I hope he’s alright. His ankle seems like it’s roast

MLB Angels cover story suggests Rendon will probably debut at 3rd tomorrow, hopefully preempting Ward/Thaiss at the hot corner.

That’s a relief. I still think Ward has a shot at being an offensive weapon; he’s got a really good swing. Idk if he’ll get enough at bats to figure it out though, and his defense is questionable

Who would have thought Taylor Ward would become a utility player known more for his bat than his glove?

Right? Long gone are the “defense-first catcher” days.

This team is no different than the last four versions before it.

59 LOBSTERS this series. Is that a lot?

The Angels are a trash baseball team.

Probably not for much longer. If I had any self control I’d dump this garbage team.

Are fans not allowed to be frustrated with the product on the field?

Dude, I’ve f’n snapped. Been doing this for too long. Every year keep hoping we’ve finally turned a corner only to be given the same garbage. It’s crazy that a team with this high of a payroll can not put together a winning team. Insane.

“Every year keep hoping we’ve finally turned a corner”

And this is where you fail yourself … You are setting the butter into the cup.

Expect failure and be surprised at our little bitty victories.

During a low moment the other game i jumped off the couch and yelled excitedly “WOO HOO!!!! MIKE TROUT 3 TIME MVP – WE DO GET SOMETHING NICE!”

That’s pretty much it.

Hate to break it to Andy Dufresne but hope isn’t always a good thing

Totally. But rolling out a whole series of comments of “Angels are trash” and “not special” makes it sound like OP is a Rangers troll, not an Angels fan.

Lol. How many special teams have the Angels had this over the past 10 years? How am I wrong? Angels have been losing a lot of games despite having a high payroll.

I don’t understand how fans who pay attention are okay with that.

You do know that the word “fan” comes from the word “fanatic?” Being mad about your favorite team losing or putting out a subpar product is exactly in line with the word fan.

Thanks Jeff. The beginning of the season is always the worst for me. Past half dozen years its the time we realize we are still the same flawed unbalanced team we’ve been.

Honestly, looking at the pitching match ups for this series I figured a 1-3 series. That’s why I was so fired up Friday, thinking that was the difference in going 2-2.

So we’re basically 3-8 on the season.

Bad call. Trout is right to argue there.

Yes but why is the ump following him continuing the argument

Because that’s what these guys do. One of the major arguments for RoboUmps. We have the technology to eliminate the HP ump.

The fact we don’t have that in this bastardized season is almost incomprehensible. Especially considering thoughtless rules like the extra innings runner starts on second rule, which is horrible.

Yeah, that was arrogant umpiring right there. One swing, tie ball game.

At least if Simba is out for some time, Fletcher has a fixed position to play when Rendon returns.

We joke but this team has been bad for a decade, despite having a high payroll and some good players. But they always remain very unbalanced. They are not special.

This team deserves Joe Maddon. Over paid, over hyped. Gets attention but can’t deliver.

Wait, we’re giving up on Maddon after a single series?

I think the losses in this series have more to do with the 3-8 batters not producing and Ohtani shitting the bed than much of what the field manager has done this weekend.

Yeah what the hell could he do better with this team? Maybe not pull starters so fast but that is it.

No conventional spring training, the batters are way behind the pitchers. And Maddon didn’t have a role in roster construction.
