LA Angels Wednesday News Crash: Another non winning season

Angels News

The Angels lost again, for the 81st time this season. Best they can do now is 81-81, another non winning season for the Halos.

Angel Stadium’s condition is unknown, although likely rather bad. The investigation into the condition started in 2023 and has yet to show any results.

Logan O’Hoppe was not having a good time on the Angels. He blames himself, but Sports Journalism sucks these days.

Around Baseball

Dodgers in some theoretical hot water. After their massive TV deal when they got their current owners, they had 1.5 Billion in debt.

Also, if the Dodgers are in need of cash and sell (doubtful, but speculated) Ohtani has in his contract an escape clause to leave the team. Then again it is Plaschke, so it is likely wrong.

What is true is that the Dodgers are one of 5 teams teaming up with a gambling site. MLB has really dropped the ball when it comes to being moral, at all.

Look, we all hate Arte, but remember, he isn’t the worst owner in MLB history. It can always be worse…

Time to vote on the best weird food at MLB ballparks! Some of these are certainly better than others.

Bieber back on the IL. Blue Jays really riding on Soriano now.

Giants had 2 players go out with a UCL at the same time. That is messed up.

Mets cheapen out, bait customers and instead of a Snoopy Plushie, it will be a shirt. Scummy behavior.

I wouldn’t read anything into it. Meckler appears set to return on Friday (or is it Saturday). So this will be a short lived promotion. The only guys on the 40 man who could play OF who aren’t on the 26 man roster (or injured) are Teo and Paris. Teo is at least a plus defender in CF.

28 years ago, the Brewers moved to the National League. To this day, when I see them – I still first think American League. i know they are National League – but it was so etched in my mind. Astros – not so much. Now the Seahawks – I still often think of them as AFC too. Anyone else have teams or things like that? I still think Redskins and Indians too, but that’s probably me being stubborn.

I actually saw him play in Beaumont for a team managed by Rogers Hornsby.

(Barely remember any of it, except the division between the expensive bleacher seats and the cheap bleacher seats was a hog wire fence.)

I am still struggling with former Pac-12 teams in the Big Ten. I am not sure I even accept teams like Rutgers or Maryland as Big Ten teams because they aren’t in the Midwest.

On the bright side, I saw Gavin Grahovac go yard twice against MLB caliber pitcher, Nick Pivetta, who was on a rehab assignment. Early returns on that pick look promising.

So great to hear. I think we did an excellent job building the hitting side of our org from the draft and the trade deadline. Still a long way to go but happy there are no longer any Minasian pitcher only drafts that yield nothing.

51-81 .386, 51-85 .391. Colorado is a half-game ahead of us and we are tied with the A’s at .391 winning percentage for being in first place in the for mediocre race for last place which does not necessarily equate to first choice in the draft next June.

Losing last night was not hard to take because of this stupid race for last place referred to as the tank because it gives us a better chance to get a top draft choice in the first three important rounds, although teams still find a few nuggets in 4-10 rounds too.

History shows more high picks are better than any one pick. MLB knew that and other than compensatory picks, they won’t let you trade for additional ones.

We are essentially guaranteed the best possible odds for the first pick in the draft at this point. The bottom three teams share the same lottery odds, and SF cannot pick earlier than 10th – so we just need to be bottom 4 if one of the other teams is SF.

Next closest to us, at 5th worst, is KC. They are 7.5 games ahead of the Angels so it would take a lot for them to overtake us in the tank standings.

It didn’t take Jo long to fix his approach when he was traded to a club that knows what it’s doing. How can Moz fix things here? Why does Brady Anderson and his team still have a job? Shouldn’t we use the last quarter of the season to start fixing the hitting.

Well, it could be Anderson does not have any history with MO, it seems apparent regardless of what we were told and what was published, Mo and Maddux were not in each other’s fan club. They one-time crossed paths before with equal results, so there is that. Anderson will more than likely be part of the cleaning out and replacing when agreements with players is settled. I have noticed that launch angle is not the major focus as it was because now you are hearing once again of level swings and making contact and with Manfrauds “superball” still in play balls will leave the park anyway. Singles hitter’s setting up the power hitters will return and more and more will be put into OBP guys. The Angels for years have relied on the HR and now know that one run HRs are not going to get it done, the analytics dept. got it wrong. Hopefully we see contact hitting taught from the bottom up with adding bunting into the mix.

What approach has Jo fixed? He can’t hit right handed pitching. His splits are pretty bad. He’s hitting 100 points lower against RHP. And looking more at B-Ref there really isn’t any difference overall between July and August numbers.

I don’t see any data that would tell my crappy eyes that Jo is a different batter now than a month or two ago. He smashes LHP and particularly non-starting LHP. He is averaging .250 against starting LHP and .312 overall against LHP. I don’t see a ‘fixed’ approach. I see the same results.

As it says, starting LHP his average is .250. Indicating he is hitting the relief LHP really well. That is my interpretation anyway.

Well, he’s not dead. And since we’re on this website you need to do two things.

First. DO NOT actually look ANYTHING up. Not ever.

Second. Bitch about how screwed up the team you demand things from, rather than root for, the next time you see an ex-player from your roster. Even if he’s not doing anything different. If he’s good for three weeks, act like the same thing NEVER happened when he was an Angel.

I’m inferring platoon by the number of AB against a RHP or LHP. If the difference is 2x I’m guessing a platoon of some sort.

Looking at the FanGraphs split tool, 22 of his 80 PAs with Cleveland have been against lefties.

vs lefties: .368/.455/.789
vs righties: .196/.276/.373

Seems like largely the old Jo to me, with some BABIP fluctuation…?

It’s 80 plate appearances with Cleveland so far, and Adell’s K rate coming into today’s game is up to 31% in August, worst of any month this year.

Hard to see any clear change in approach in such a small sample.

Speaking of worst owners in sports, it’s been astonishing watching the dumpster fire of the Browns this season.

As bad as we all think this franchise is, it’s still not Browns bad. The Deshaun Watson trade and extension is the single worst contract in the history of sports.

And then he goes out and plays like absolute crap in the pre-season, then calls out the entire fanbase publicly, and then two days later they name him the opening day starter.

Sad that Arturo has siphoned so much money out of the team like he has, but now in his sunset he sees that he may have missed out on so much more in money and personal fame. While maybe no one will ever equal Marge Schott as being an idiot as an owner, Arturo is up there thinking he knew more than any GM ever did. Jerry Jones as GM of the Cowboys is a mirror image, difference is Jones keep building and moving upwards, Arturo just drains the life out of the team. Jones is greedy and smart but is no GM, Arturo is greedy but stupid but richly stupid. As for selling the team, it will take someone with deep pockets and the where with all to hire the right people and that’s hard to do, just look at the Mets.

The politicians, who have no clue about construction, development, etc., have made a complete mess of the Angels Stadium issue. Who the hell hires a company out of Missouri, which is not even in our seismic zone, to do an assessment of the stadium when world class engineering firms are right here in So Cal! This firm must have bamboozled them with their marketing dept. I can tell you that The Angels replaced the structure under all the seats in the sections above and to the side of the bullpen area about 6 years ago. Problem for the city is, The Angels have to do the upkeep, but the bldg was built in the 1960s! Building codes change every 3 to 4 years or after a major seismic event. You do the math. And the City is liable for those upgrades. Politicians will screw up up project and grind it to a halt almost every time. That report should have been complete in a year, but they probably ran out of money in the budget at the Missouri firm so they slowed down to a “when we have extra time” pace.

I will virtually never vote for a local person that has real estate, building, or developing as their core work. Now – I’ll take them over a tax and spender – but if it’s down to a choice of two similar people – I’m going to try and find someone not tied in to those areas. My family saw a devaluing zoning change because they thought we would sell and they wanted to pick up the property (actually approached us to buy within 30 days of the change) just to name a few. I guarantee you – they would have sat on it and got it changed back later.

Even in a small, very small town in Texas, the city council voted to pay $1 million to a consulting firm to see if we need a loop around the city. Not to build it. Just to see if we need it.

Politicians and any part of Government at any level will screw things up, but something like stadium upgrading means hundreds of millions in dollars spent and that means there is going be corruption and lots of it especially in California. Most might disagree with me, but is it time to pull the plug on the Big A and build a new stadium like Arturo wanted? It could incorporate being closer to the train station and incorporate 3 levels of parking. Make it a place to not only watch baseball but include concerts etc. Problem is that billionaires think the public should finance their greed.

Most of the time, it’s the cities that are lining up to provide financing. I don’t necessarily view it as billionaires strong-arming communities due to their greed.

Cities can get a massive tax windfall from having a local sports stadium (depending on how they set up taxes), so they essentially are bribing teams to choose their municipality. Hammond, Indiana is offering $1B to help fund the Bears stadium, for example.

Do the billionaires need it? Probably not. But if they are being offered billions in local funding to help pay for construction, why wouldn’t they take it?

Cities and counties and states give away a lot in tax revenue to bait the hook so to speak to hold on to or entice to come to an area or city. Look at Indiana and the Bears. Build into the deal though are sales taxes and in some cases income taxes. The big pull is in the surrounding areas such as currently Inglewood and how the coffers are then filled.

The issue for Anaheim is in who is responsible for the upkeep and restoration for the stadium.

Upkeep responsibility is going to be in the lease. Any “restoration”, depending on how that is defined, is an issue. The bottom line is, you can “remodel” the stadium, but the moment you do it is going to trigger all kinds of code and seismic upgrades. From fire sprinklers, to drain line sizes to water feed line sizes, gas lines and sizes (gas is now banned in some new builds), then you open up the structural side of things. The last major remodel was quite some time ago and codes have changed. Caveat is that the Head Building Official can exempt certain things.

“Cities lining up” is not a thing as much now as in the past as the public does not seem to be as, shall we say, excited about financing huge amount of tax money for teams to move in. It takes a lifetime to recoup the investment. Infrastructure is now in the spotlight, not added congestion and low paying seasonal jobs.

Yeah I agree with you on this. People hate knowing their tax money is funding these kinds of projects. I knew several people in Indiana that stopped being fans of the Colts because the public funded Lucas Oil Stadium.

That being said, I do believe it can be a net positive for a community if the economics are set up correctly. But sometimes that’s a big ask of the government to not screw it up or let corruption get in the way.

One of the issues is you have 2 or more entities eying that land, and each of those entities has a politicians ear and is feeding them the sales pitch / propaganda as to how the city is being screwed, BUT …. Their plan for the land would be a financial windfall for the city and the community!

Give me 8 Steven Kwan’s on the field and I’ll see you at the World Series. I think he might be the most underrated guy in baseball. Love watching that guy play. The top three of the Indian’s lineup are really fun to watch hit.

I really like Meckler – and we might have found a real gem.

Now, of course you need pitching and defense- but Kwan is so good everywhere but in the power category. Multiple Gold Glove winner, runs the bases well – and fights as good as anyone in the league at the plate. Get 8 true baseball players fighting like that at the plate and throw in a Trout and you will be in most games.
