LA Angels Wednesday News Crash: Happy Canada Day

Morning Angels fans, have some links.

Angels News

The Angels lost again. What else is new? Well, it was on GA’s BD. Which is a reminder that he is gone. That’s a bummer.

What is a continuous bummer has been the team’s lack of success. Even worse, the Marlins have a winning record. Yes, THE MARLINS. We already have 100 loss White Sox being good, but the MARLINS?!

Around Baseball

A not fight broke out yesterday after some heated words. Not very good of a fight, much less than the Soler one earlier this season.

1K wins for Dave Roberts as manager. Yeah, he is gonna be in the HOF for sure. I was there when Mike Scioscia won his 1,000th. Ah, the good old days…

Players forgetting how many outs there are will always be funny (When it isn’t your team). Haha.

Something I forgot to mention in the game last night was that Woo broke the record for consecutive shutout innings in the field formerly known as SafeCo. He also allowed a run right after.

MLB does something good for once, give 1M to Venezuela after the earthquake hit. I mean, the net worth of the owners and players make that seem rather small but, it’s SOMETHING.

And MLB is denied trademarking “Play Ball”. I mean, way to be 150 years late to do that?

Today is Canada day, which is why the US is playing the Soccer game. Huh? And Canada is playing on 4th of July. WHAT?! See, MLB is smart and has Toronto hosting today. Another win for Baseball!

May I be the first to wish everyone here at CTPG a “Happy Bobby Bonilla Day!!!!”
🏟️ And the the thing is, once his day ends, it will be picked up by Shohei Ohtani who starts collecting his deferred when Bonilla’s ends!!!!! It’s like Festivus in July !!!!!! Break out the aluminum pole (I find tinsel very distracting)

Yes, you may. Bobby (or his agent) were way ahead of their time!

It was definitely his agent, according to an interview I saw with Bobby. He still thanks his agent for talking him into it.

Soooooo no game today because of the World Cup? You think MLB could have scheduled a series out of town for the mariners because of this then skipping a day

The Reds simply can not win a division game. 4-16 against the rest of the NL Central. That is a pretty good division but that is brutal.

One of the reasons the Angels record was better in June is because Trout wasn’t in the line up for half the month. They are a better team with him out of the line up.

Marlins are flying high on a $70 million payroll, most of which is being paid for by other teams paying the luxury taxes on bloated payrolls.

Bremner and Rada made the All-Star Futures Game roster

Weird, for some reason I thought Rada was having a down year. I checked the stats and surprised he was sporting a .388 OBP.

Maybe he was struggling earlier and turned it on recently?

April
.301 / .394 / .386
18% K rate
12% BB rate

May
.198 / .310 / .302
17% K rate
12% BB rate

June
.361 / .461 / .398
12% K rate
15% BB rate

No power to speak of whatsoever but the rest of his hitting profile is MLB-ready

We need Rada for his defense more than anything. My biggest pet peeve is all of our OF playing so deep they get to watch at the fence for 2 seconds as the ball sails over their head. That should speak to your range is in homerun territory, but Angels can’t pick up on that. Then Adell with the numerous liners 10 feet in front of me but I’m going to back up and play it on a hop.Guess a guy with an OBP under 300 doesn’t really understand we just want to stop guys getting on base and that if you let a few get behind you, you’ll more than make up for it by catching some that you normally would let fall.

Yep, Trout and Adell play so deep, they should get tickets to sit in the bleachers. And the manager allows them to do it. Add this to the reasons Adell should be traded and Trout should not be on the field.

I’ve tried to hop off Team Tank the last week and a half and this team constantly makes sure to remind me how bad we are.

Gotta trade Soriano and Detmers. If we don’t it will be proof #10000000 that Arte is the end decision maker and the GM does not matter and will not ever matter

If I could speak to Molly I would say the following. The fan base cares about winning just as much as they care about the other things like safety, affordability, pleasant experience, good food, etc. Winning is one leg of the 4 legged stool so to speak. You need all 4 legs. Whether or not the fanbase and the public in general accurately understood or interpreted what Arte said, the public understanding is that he doesn’t care about winning and that needs to be cleaned up.

Kurt may be a nice guy, but he needs to go. He is Perry’s guy and he’s also done a poor job. Don’t make someone currently here the interim. Have JM bring in someone from the outside for rest of the season. Let’s finish the season professionally.

Engage the fanbase. Tell them the club cares about winning and is taking the steps necessary to do that. There are numerous steps and it won’t happen over night. Molly can say that now that she’s in the position she’s in, she has Arte’s backing to effect positive change.

The club PR has been atrocious and needs to take a different path.

I would even go as far as to say winning is one of the two most important legs of the stool (along with safety).

If games were twice the price, I may not be able to afford to go to as many but its not keeping me out of the ballpark, especially if we are winning.

Fan experience also not a huge deal. Bad food isn’t going to make me skip the ballpark altogether just like good food isn’t going to make me go to games I wouldn’t otherwise go to. Maybe for out-of-towners this matters e.g. I like to catch games at Petco on occasion because its such an amazing stadium.

Safety is probably important to most people. As someone with small children, I would absolutely not go to games if I felt like safety was a huge concern (the alleged outdated structural inspections notwithstanding).

Wining however has a huge impact on whether I want to go, especially late in the season. Imagine the team pushing for playoff seeding in mid-September. That’s a game I want to go watch.

No disagreement. Just making the point that no matter the number and identity of the pillars or left and right wing of the airplane, winning is essential, and if removed, makes the whole thing collapse.

For sure! I hope I didn’t come across as disagreeing. Was just adding some additional thoughts.

It’s crazy that Arte could be so dense as a business owner to not recognize that winning is extremely important to the marketability of his product.

Some will cheer this for whatever reason. Here it goes, I will walk away from this team only if this one move goes down and that is if Albert Pooholes becomes manager.

Now that Minasian is gone, Moz and Jolly simply must get Suzuki out of there. The mismanagement is hindering future development and progress, such as it is.

Not with you on this one, reason being that there will be a better selection in the off season. A new front office will be able to choose their own guy for another reason. It really doesn’t matter now who makes out the line-up card as the roster is not going to change for the better this season especially if MO starts wholesale trading for yuts.

I’d just like to get an interim in there. Maybe that bench coach with managing experiences.

I just think it’s malpractice to have Walton starting over Guzman or Peraza. We need to see what we’ve got. Can Suzuki be made to understand that?

Even if it was not the original plan, I wholeheartedly agree. Kurt prevents you from moving forward and represents the Perry regime. I agree regarding wins and losses it doesn’t really matter, but keeping Kurt around sends a message that the rest of the season is meaningless so don’t bother showing up, even if that’s true. Hire an interim manager from outside the organization to finish the season out. Maybe someone like Buck Showalter if you could talk him into it. Make the rest of the season interesting. Suzuki is beyond boring and is not a good leader. You never know what could happen with decent leadership. We should still manage the roster for the future and not this year.

Well put. Can’t send a message that Kurt’s complete lack of discipline or basic competency is part of the culture the team is trying to build.

The moment that did it for me was Soler hit into a double play ball that was bobbled and he ran 50% down the line only to try and speed up once he saw the bobble, and Eaton gave him a pat on the back and he stayed in the lineup. Yea yea sore groin, then take him out of the lineup, we’ve all seen he’s not better than Meckler, Walton, even Siri…..

COMPLETELY AGREE. Followed shortly by him benching one of our younger players for making an error later that week (I forget the exact situation now but I think it was Peraza).

In Dirt’s world, making an honest error is a more punishable offense than choosing to play lazy. He’s such a dipshit.

QA with John Mozeliak. It’s behind the paywall but I found it to be a good read. Hopefully he’s allowed to do what he feels needs to be done.

Thanks for posing. When you read the comments below the article, you find that people who know the Cardinals have very mixed views of Mozeliak.

He was not on the same page as his front office in how to rebuild and DeWitt had a huge choice to make and then pulled the plug.

He had issues with the issues of hiring his managers for one. Two, is in St. Louis the fans believe in winning every season and they wanted change at the top.

Opinions are like belly buttons(trying to keep it clean), everyone has one.

All I know as a fan is that it appears that, based on experience and execution, Mozeliak>minasian. At least Mozeliak has had success on his resume.

Good for USPTO to deny MLB. It’s like MLB thinks they own everything baseball. I think this CBA is going to create a long stoppage. I just returned from Atlanta where my son played in the WWBA against close to 400 teams. On the flight back, my son sat next to a top ranked 2027 high school player who hit 98 on the gun there and was only the third fastest clocked. (Striker Pence hit 101 again.) These kids are definitely scheduled to get paid next year and MLB is suggesting now they won’t – and that the MLBPA represents them in the CBA is ridiculous because they have zero vote with the union. Do you think the MLBPA actually cares if a HS player is drafted? They could care less. MLB needs to lose their antitrust exemptions. Wait until some top high school prospect gets hurt and misses out on that payday. That lawsuit is coming.

Let me add, MLB – who invest huge money in players does far better job with arm care than a college coach. Just watch what these coaches do to players workload in the College World Series.

Insightful post, appreciate the perspective you’re able to bring to HS ball.

Billionaires eventually ruin everything and they will do their damnedest the hurt the future of baseball in the CBA negotiations. As much as I want a salary cap, I don’t want it at the expense of minor league baseball

High school players are amateurs and do not have any kind of employment status with any MLB team. There is no lawsuit coming. There has never been any guarantee that a HS player would be drafted. No HS is “scheduled” to get paid. Certainly it has happened that some MLB teams have not drafted a HS player during a draft. Can a HS player sue a team for not drafting a HS player? No, can’t. Can one HS player sue because he was not drafted but two teammates were drafted? No.

BTW, the MLB anti-trust exemption covers only major league player employment. Not anyone else including MiLB. I think it is time MLB loses those exemptions, even courts have said the past decisions were incorrect. But those exemptions have nothing to do with the draft.

An employer can change entry criteria. I don’t have any idea why MLB wrote this down in a proposal other than shock value. At this point it might be only Congress that can remove the exemptions. Courts have repeatedly said they don’t want to be involved by refusing to change or remove the exemptions.

also i’ve read there are age restrictions on the old age range but not on the young age range. You can not hire someone because they are young, not because they are old.

When the employer has a monopoly and laws to protect that monopoly that affect someone’s right to work even though some players already have the talent, and we can point to talent in MLB this year that proves some can be ready before their 20th birthday – this whole set up can be challenged. It doesn’t mean they will win – but they have a case. Looking at how rulings have been coming down – I don’t think they will want to open the hornets nest. Personally, I think a lot of it is posturing. Points they can give in on that don’t really matter to them. When I used to do office lease negotiations – I would always ask for very expensive items I didn’t care to get – (marble entries, etc) they were always things I would give up and all but once out of about 50 leases – I actually got my throw away items.

MLB or other sports leagues wouldn’t be sued as a monopoly. That won’t work.
Yes, posturing, but an odd one. Seems like the owners are throwing anything on the wall in the hope to get to arbitration.

yea i’m a teacher and if any of my sons were anywhere close to talented enough to get drafted I’d tell them to go to pro ball. You can always go back to college later. You can’t get development time back and professional instruction. Nothing wrong with being 23 and going to college after even a failed pro sports run.

Soriano got to be reminded yesterday that The angels have the blowiest of blow pens.
I wonder how much of that 1 million given for the Venezuela recovery will actually make it to the “recovery effort”? 3% maybe?

Along those lines, MLB should propose expanding rosters. With pitchers dropping like flies, having a couple more arms available should be attractive to all parties.
