Angels News

Well the Angels won for once last night as Toronto defense and closer melted down. First time in almost a month they scored more than 5 in a game. Crazy right?

Part of that was Yoan Mocada returning and he hit a 3 run blast to seal the deal. As the team of misfit former prospects, he fits in real nice here.

To make room for his return though the deck chairs were shuffled some and relief pitchers rotate through the worst bullpen in Baseball. Oh and Touki Toussant was DFA-ED right after he was called up. Kinda rude.

Hunter Strickland is still at it and is now an Angel. Minor leauge deal but he will see action here soon with how bad this group is.

Around Baseball

Oven mitts are now down all the way to the youth level. Sorry I mean sliding mitts. It has been a decade why haven’t the Angels done a Mike Trout oven mitt giveaway? They are so bad at it. Notably, at the lowest levels you aren’t even supposed to slide head first so it is because of fashion. Like having a MIKE TROUT OVEN MITT COME ON!

Speaking of sliding into bases, what is happening in Miami? Apparently the Marlins have given up the most stolen bases by far.

Juan Soto walks a lot. He walks so much that he now has walked the most out of any player before turning 27.

The Giants blew out the Cubs… In extra innings. How is 14-5 only the 4th worst extra innings loss?

This year’s draft with Perry in charge is just flat out scary. Read Turk’s comments and all 3 are right imho. If Perry does not take one of the first 3, he should be fired. He likes fastball pitchers who bring it 100+ mph, in Arnold you have a well-rounded pitcher with exceptional control. Hernandez is crazy good prep (I’ve seen him twice) and in Holiday another former MLB player’s son (Tatis, Vlady Jr., Witt, etc.) who could be our next Trouty. Get the picture (Yes, we see.) but PTP may not, as he is not that smart.

Dear Mr. Callis, why do we want the 10th rated player in the draft who is just a hard thrower looking for TJS. Arnold at least knows the strike zone. Holliday is a once every 10 year’s draft choice.

Probably a question better posed to Minasian and his scouts than Callis/Mayo. They’re mocking Doyle to the Angels based on who they’re hearing the team is connected to, and their recent drafting trends. (They mocked Holliday to the Nats at #1.)

Been mentioning this in the weekly NCAA articles, but I really think Angels fans interested in the draft should take a good look at Kyson Witherspoon as well.

Best collegiate right-hander in the draft class. 2.12 ERA / 2.23 FIP. .181 batting average against (Arnold is .182, but Witherspoon has pitched 17 more innings, in the SEC.) Second in the nation in DIGS, 95-98 FB that hits triple digits. 60 grade slider, five pitch portfolio, four of them arguably above average. Easy, repeatably delivery, unlike Doyle. One of seven collegiate arms currently with 100+ strikeouts on the season.

I dunno – my gut has been telling me it’s Doyle or Arquette for a few weeks, so when Callis says that’s what they’re actually hearing, it seems to ring true.

But to be fair, he said they’re in on all the top college lefties – meaning Arnold and Anderson too. Though he did say “Doyle in particular”.

Having been through Bachman and Joyce, it’s surprising that the lesson has not been learned. Bachman has a 70-grade fastball, with an unorthodox, effortful delivery as well. Like Doyle, he was virtually unhittable in college, with a 1.81 ERA, a 1.46 FIP, a K/9 north of 14.

None of it mattered in pro ball. We’re basically hoping he passes his rehab stint in low-A ball this week, and we get him back for, what, 4-6 weeks before he succumbs to another injury?

IMHO, yes, he is a future all-star and can play left side infield. I would like to hear what you think of Holliday, who do you believe should be top 3 choices-really.

I think Holliday, Arnold, Hernandez are fine top 3 guys… though i think Witherspoon, Anderson and LaViollette could all sneak in by their season’s end. Houston too.

I just don’t think Holiday is a “once in a decade” prospect. He’s just a solid 1st rounder, wouldn’t even be near #1 in a lot of draft classes. I actually like Hernandez more than him.

I dunno, I like the upside of Hernandez. In the modern league you need guys with a plus, plus fastball in order to have a real “Ace who can dominate.” I think the days of Greg Maddox or even Kershaw are over. I’d take Hernandez over Arnold.

Well, the Angels’ top prospect is Dana, drafted as a prep pitcher, so there’s that.

When it comes to development, Hernandez is about as polished a teenage arm as you’re going to find, and IMO the highest talent in the draft class, prep or college.

My first round short list is presently:

Seth Hernandez
Kyson Witherspoon
Jamie Arnold
Ethan Holliday

In that order. Then it’s a big gap and a clutch of other names who seem like mid-to-late first rounders in a typical draft year.

As much as it sucks being an Angels fan, at least we don’t get our asses beat by the ushers, or jump off our RF wall. Pirates fans are having a rough go of it.

man, I am so nervous about this. I just don’t trust Perry. Even though I’m well aware that baseball draft picks notoriously don’t pan out I still look at our #2 spot and hope we get a generational player.

Why not trust Perry? I think he’s shown a pretty good eye for arms for the most part.
That being said, Doyle isn’t my top choice, but that’s a mock from Callis

Was there a /s intended after that first sentence? He selected 19 pitchers in the 2021 draft, without a single one currently healthy or making a clear impact. His pitcher selections last draft are largely relievers that they’re attempting to convert to starters, w/ uneven results thus far.

His track record on drafting pitchers is pretty poor to date. If Caden Dana finally materializes, that will be the first starter in four drafts that will have stuck at the MLB level from Minasian’s domestic drafts.

Not saying he is perfect by any means, but you could def argue to a varying degree he has an eye for the talent. Whether that talent works out is another story. Bachman (injured), Silseth (first in the class to the bigs, also hurt), many of those draftees traded.

Dana, Darrell-Hicks, Natera jr., Hurtado, young DSL guys, not to mention the italian and Klassen.

Our pitching on the farm ranked, what, 4th at the end of the year last year on the pipeline? That doesn’t just happen if our GM is that bad at identifying talent

I don’t think you’re going to get a generational player if Callis/Mayo are correct. You’re going to get a 2-3 WAR infielder who hits .270 and 15-20 HRs per year in Arquette, or fastball-dominant fireballer with delivery and injury red flags in Doyle.

I hope they’re wrong, but the Perry draft room has tendencies, and to date, they’re not great.

This is one of the first mocks I’ve seen that speaks to actual FO connections to players. Fits my expectations of Minasian thus far – going with the big fastball (Doyle) on the model of past selections like Bachman or Joyce, or going with the high floor / lower ceiling position player like Arquette.

Sigh. Not what I would do, but fits the mold of fast-tracked players with holes in their profiles.

This shouldn’t be hard. You have the best prep RHP in half a decade on the board in Hernandez, plus two college pitchers in Arnold and Witherspoon that combine safety with potential #2 projection. Lastly, you have a 3B with premium bloodlines and 60+ grade power.

I watched it. The control and command were still rather problematic, especially in the last two innings. In a “good” outing, the hitters don’t make contact because they’re waiting out a walk or have no idea where the pitch is going. The problem is, neither does he!

Still seems like a clear-cut leverage reliever to me whose wildness and pitch inefficiency can work once through the order, but it’s going to be a challenge to get him to 6-7 innings reliably.

Having an actual MLB caliber third baseman on the roster pushes a guy who doesn’t belong in MLB out of the lineup.

Unfortunately, we replaced the constantly injured Rendon with a guy who lives on the IL nearly as often. I was on the site saying I would like to add Moncada.

Conversely, I’ve been watching the A’s a bit and Luis Arias has already put up 0.5WAR and has been healthy all for the price of $1.1 million for 2025.
