Angels lose to Yankees in Pitching Duel

Optimism was in the air as the Angels faced the MFY for game 2 after winning game 1 last night. Anderson vs Gil. The even year vet vs the Cy rookie. Well, Anderson didn’t do as well as the youngster. He did fine, but only 5 innings, giving up 2 runs on 4 hits, striking out 4 and walking 6. But Gil was dominant, giving up just 1 run on 2 hits in 8 innings and the Angels would have to come back to have a chance.

Highlighted Recap

The game started oddly with an interference call against the MFY in the first. Boone got ejected and the Angels got out of a jam.

That was weird

No one scored until the 4th when a mistake led to a MFY home run.

1-0 MFY

And then a little leauge home run made it 2-0 MFY.

So close to getting him

The Angels finally scored thanks to Logan hitting his own home run in the 7th!

2-1 MFY

Gil did not make any more mistakes as he went 8 innings. Cy rookie was an understatement wow. If the Angels were to win, it would have to be a walk off. But the Angels did have a chance as the bullpen kept it 2-1.

Will Rengifo gave the Angels the chance singling and moving to 2nd on a wild pitch with NO OUTS. Then the winning run, Taylor Ward, was walked WITH NO OUTS.

Too bad Willie Calhoun GIDP. SMH Willie Calhoun of the Angels. Logan grounded out. Angels lose.

Upcoming

One more game vs the MFY tomorrow. And then a trip to Seattle, for the first game vs a PDT team. Oh and then back home again to face the Padres. Who made this schedule?!

A great effort. Schanuel really needs to get sent down to minors already. Please sit Joe Adell before his value keeps going down to nothing. Got to try to get rid of him for decent prospects.

Another winnable game falls by the wayside.

Effort is there, the talent is not.

I’d say the talent is there (at least partially) but the EXECUTION is not. See GIDP by Willie Calhoun with no outs runners on 1st and 2nd.

Gil is and was on fire going into last night’s start.

IMHO Rineeeeeefo should’ve gone for two.

Taylor Ward had 1 job in the 9th. Get Geefy to 3rd. Accepting the walk sealed the L.

Dude, just shut up. They didn’t want to pitch to him. You can’t blame him for not chasing balls out of the zone.

I should ask you that question. Since when does any fan blame one of his players for taking a walk with pitches that are clearly balls ?

Exactly, it becomes the next batter to drive home the run(s).

As players we say do a job for a reason. The job there was not to walk it was to advance Geefy. Almost every pitch in the AB was away. The perfect time to sit location and expand the zone a bit to move the runner.

Also you need to chill. No need to tell people to shut up here. Were all on here giving opinions and frankly my G14 classification as a player and now coach likely gives mine a little more weight than most.

Ward had a job, that was to move the runners, as is any batter up with runners on and less than 2 outs. But also, as a coach you would know to teach wait for your pitch and a walk is better than hitting the pitchers pitch into a DP.

Lousy team play can get everybody pissed off despite who thinks what play or player is to blame. Unfortunately on this blog there will be a lot of unhappy criticism going around. Don’t take it personally. I wish we could have conversations about how good the team is doing and playoffs., but nope, that’s only for those Blue Fks across town.

Were you watching the game? Blaming Ward makes little or no sense. Besides there are others to look at for this loss such as the whole line up, the throw to third that was awful and not stopped by a poor fielding 3B that allowed the go ahead run.

Accepting the walk sealed the L?”

Dude, you baseball much?

Calhoun was 1 for his last 17 going into that AB. Pillar (right hander or not) should have hit there. Even Thaiss would have been a better risk.

Totally agree. I was thinking to myself that he shouldn’t even be starting, let alone batting 4th. Cold as an ice cube.

Calhoun sucks. He needs to go. He probably cost us this game with that lame and predictable DP.

Exactly. I was saying to my son n, why is Calhoun hitting with Pillar available?

When Willie Calhoun is your hope to steal a win in the 9th, you are screwed.

Should have been Pillar at the plate.

Rengifo’s error was the difference.

As always, Rengifo giveth, and Rengifo taketh away.

Lets say Volpe stays at 3rd there with no outs. You don’t think Soto-Judge-Stanton would have driven him in?

Pretty sure the Calhoun DP was the difference.

Game would have been 1-1 and the Halos would have lost in extra innings.

We will never know will we. It wasn’t Soto-Judge-Stanton that hurt us, was it?

Runner on 3rd, no outs. I’d think Soto or Judge get the run in. Anyways, it’s a pointless hypothetical
