LA Angels Thursday News Crash: Crickets

Not a whole lot of Angels news today. Giving you what I got. This is Nolan Schanuel talking about hitting.

Will Smith, the catcher, just got a ten year extension from the dodgers worth $140 Million. Meanwhile, the Rangers just selected the contract of Jared Walsh.

The Astros just claimed pitcher Penn Murfee from the Braves while the Red Sox will acquire Naoyuki Uwasawa from the Rays. Also of the Red Sox, Noah Song will undergo Tommy John surgery.

The Nationals released first baseman Lewin Diaz. Woo Hoo!

David Rubinstein’s group is the new owner of the Baltimore Orioles.

My reference was in the Trout stat of 12 straight opening day starts. I would love to see Trouty play in 145-148 games this season.

The pitching matchup favors the Orioles for sure but if we can keep it close and wait for Kimbrel, we win

10 minutes just to announce the bal staff. Damn, that’s how deep the angels staff should be.

Go Halos! Not expecting much today with elite Burnes against our erratic Sandoval. Get lucky! Across town the Dodger opening day Ohtani hype has cooled off. Plenty of tix $55 on up still available, too bad for fans that paid $500 presale prices. Surprisingly Angels opener tix are pricey, anything decent (not top level) is $75+. Not what I expected after this off season. But I’ll be there.

And no second round draft pick in 2025 as well. But, depending upon terms it may actually be worth the penalty unlike the Thor and Tyler Anderson signings.

Honestly, my “hope” (doused in a gallon of Hopium), is that either:
A. Arte is getting the team ready to sell (regardless of what he says) or
B. Perry convinced Arte to actually have a plan, and that plan is to just save money for next year so that

Whoever owns the Angels in 2025 will go bonkers and sign Soto, Burnes and Kim.

LINEUP

3B Rendone
RF Hicks
CF Trout
LF Ward
2B Drury
1B Schanuel
DH Sano
C O’Hoppe
SS Neto

My only gripe is Hicks over Moniak/Adell.

Rengifo, Moniak, Adell, Thaiss is a solid bench.

Is the Baltimore starter a lefty? If not, then Sano or Hicks over Moniak is interesting. It looks like he’s going with the hot bat with Sano although Hicks has not been hot lately.

Hicks is a switch hitter and is actually better left; at least more power from LH.

Cowboy26

Hicks is actually much better as a RHB Frosty. (career wise .758 vs .702 OPS-with the difference in the Slugging nos.) Just like Rengifo.

It may make more sense to move Schanny back to the 2nd spot and put Moniak in the 6 hole in the future against RHP’s

BTW are any of these lineups better than this?

Eckstein SS
Erstad CF
Salmon RF
Anderson LF
Glaus 3B
Fullmer DH
Spiezio 1B
Molina C
Kennedy 2B

Someone should post the good ol’ picture of the scoreboard the day our entire lineup was above .300.

I was sitting at work that day, and took a screenshot of GameDay when that happened. But that was multiple companies ago, so I don’t know where that screenshot is anymore.

Aw, Aybar who lead the team with post-game water bottles being bounced off of Jared Weaver’s chest.

That was a laser killer stare Weave gave out.

For a high OBP guy, I’m not sure I’m liking where Schanuel is penciled in.

In fact, I would switch Rendon and Schanuel. It’s not like Rendon is a burner on the base paths anyway.

But maybe this is the last stand for Rendon. Give him as many ABs as possible to see if there was still any semblance of the player in 2019-2020 left. And if not, surprise DFA by mid-season.

Wash said he moved him down in the order due to him battling back tightness.

So hitting 6th is easier on your back than hitting 2nd? You learn something new every day.

Lower pressure from earth’s gravity the further you move down in the order. Surprised you didn’t know that.

I think what Pedro means is that it would mean fewer ABs for Nolan.

Roy Hobbs

So resting is even fewer. Pedro is fine, Wash makes no sense. He could just say that because of his back, he’s good enough to play, but not his normal self and less effective, and he’s hitting him 6th until he get’s back to normal and in a good groove. Now that makes sense. The other thing is a bunch of BS. Or, he could say, I want him down there so he focuses on driving the ball more as opposed to table setting.

Roy Hobbs

Reply to  PedroCerrano

Understood. I think the long version is what I said above which is that he’s good enough to play but not 100%, but when he’s back to normal, he’ll move him up.

Twebur

But he’ll continue his OB streak to 30. Even with a bad back and fewer AB’s.

Wally, that’s silly. Sit him down for a few days if he’s not 100% and he needs to rest, or DH him.

my gripe is Sano over the two. He hit .204 in the spring so I have to squint to find that he did everything that was asked of him. A .740 OPS. Moniak was similar, Adell was higher. If anyone did everything that was asked, it was Marisnick, who didn’t make the team.

2024 Angels Gut Pick.
Sano and Hicks will be a + surprise. And will show some Grit.

I’ll lay money ($100 Eppei Bucks) that Hicks becomes an off-season steal.

I’m also a little surprised about Strickland, if I remember his numbers correctly.

These two choices seem to fly in the face of Wash saying we’ll play the best players.

But to be fair, I know that some amount of planning has to go into it regarding who can be optioned, etc etc.

Why the love affair with Sano? Moniak should be starting somewhere.

I appreciate that Nolan thinks about what he is doing and has a plan, something that cannot be said about many other players. If you have enough natural talent and your thinking about what you’re doing, you’re going to be successful.

Cowboy26

Did everyone else here realize that Hunter Strickland didnt make the Opening Day roster? I thought for sure with that spring performance he would have been a lock. Maybe the Angels didnt want to lose any one on the 40 man? But considering the plumber hasn’t played in a game since late February, I thought it was a no brainer to place him on the 60 IL. Maybe the Billy Eppler fiasco has them worried about misreporting injuries?

Zuniga got the last spot.

There’s a story on MLB.com

Cowboy26

But Zuniga has options. Despite the veto He got pretty hard this spring. It seems like the Angels are getting too enamored with Velo instead of high leverage experience but whatever. Perry’s Pens have been less than stellar so maybe this new philosophy

Most other teams have announced SP’s for first week of games or more… Wash has ONLY announced Sandoval for today and nothing else !
