Game 2 of the shortened and delayed Spring Training resulted in an Angels win. Daniel Ponce De Leon was the ‘starter’ today on the mound. More importantly, Mike Trout, Shohei Ohtani, Jared Walsh, David Fletcher, and Max Stassi played as well.
The 5 starting starters that project to start on opening day went 5-10 with a HBP, a home run, and 5 RBI today. Upton and Ward did good as well. Even Rengifo and Wade got in on the action. In fact, there was so much good offense it would be easier to say who didn’t do well. Walsh going 0-2 with a K and a HBP.
Recap
1st
Daniel Ponce De Leon got the start on the mound, and after a strikeout, allowed solo shot. 1-0 Sneks to start. Despite allowing 2 more baserunners, he got out of it with only that one run thanks to Rengifo.
Fletcher flew out, Ohtani grounded out, but Mike Trout singled in his first at bat in almost a year. Walsh then got a HBP to put 2 on for Taylor Ward. But he flew out. Still 1-0 Sneks after 1.
2nd
Another inning for Daniel Ponce De Leon, and this time it went much better, having a quick 1-2-3 inning.
Justin Upton led off the 2nd and got a single. If he actually has a good year, things become much more hopeful. Stassi singled to put 2 on. Tyler Wade then got a bunt hit to load the bases with no outs. Rengifo hit a sac fly to tie the game at 1. Fletcher grounded out but got an RBI out of it to give the Angels a 2-1 lead. Ohtani singled in the 3rd run, and Trout’s single put 2 on for Walsh. He struck out. 3-1 Angels after 2.
3rd
Mike Mayers came in to pitch the 3rd. He allowed a two out double, followed by another double to cut into the Angels’ lead. He still kept the 3rd run from scoring, making it 3-2 Angels going into the bottom of the inning.
Not to worry though, as Taylor “Blake” Ward got that run back with a leadoff home run. Then Upton got a HBP, which was followed by a 2 run home run by Stassi! 6-2 Angels. After Wade got out, Rengifo tripled and scored on a sac fly by Fletcher. 7-2 Angels.
With a big lead, the starters started getting pulled, with Gatewood hitting for Ohtani and striking out to end the inning.
4th
Jhonathan Diaz came in to pitch next. It wasn’t the only change as subs subbed in. Sierra went in CF for Trout, Adell in LF for Uptorn, Romine came in to catch for Stassi, and Mayfield took over SS for Fletcher. 3 straight hits with 2 outs unfortunately gave the Sneks a run, making it 7-3. Luckily, that was the only run scored in the half inning.
Sierra reached on an infield single to start the inning. Walsh flew out, but Ward singled to put 2 on for Adell. He GIDP to end the inning. Still 7-3 Angels after 4.
5th
Diaz was back out on the mound again, but Trey Cabbage took over 1B for Walsh. It was a quick 1-2-3 inning for Diaz, able to get that 3rd out uch smoother than last inning.
Romine singled to lead off the 5th, and Wade had one of his own as well. Rengifo grounded out but avoided the double play. First and third with one out for Mayfield and Captain Jack hot a 3 run Jimmy jack to extend the Angels lead to 10-3.
6th
Kyle Barraclough took the mound and more subs came in as well. Dillon Thomas took over RF for Taylor Ward, Jose Rojas got 3B for Tyler Wade, and Andrew Velazquez took over 2B for Luis Rengifo. Kyle did not have a clean inning, allowing a run after hitting a player and allowing multiple hits. 10-4 Angels.
Cabbage grounded out to lead off the 6th, Thomas did as well. But Adell hit a 2 out triple to put a runner on for Romine. But he flew out. Still 10-4 Angels after 6.
7th
Jimmy Herget was on the mound now, and after a single, he got a GIDP to get 2 quick outs. A strikeout to the 3rd batter took the game into the stretch with the Angels up 10-4.
The runs did not stop coming as Rojas got in on the action with a leadoff home run of his own! 11-4 Angels. Gatewood got HBP, and Sierra walked to allow Cabbage to single in yet another run. 12-4 Angels after 7.
8th
Austin Warren had the 8th, well, he pitched it, having it locked down was not what happened. Hits led to a run, shrinking the lead to 12-5.
Martinez struck out, Muirine singled, Rojas walked, but Velazquez GIDP to end the Angels’ offense for the day. 12-5 Angels after 8.
9th
Andrew Wantz came in to finish the game. He shut down the Sneks for the first two outs, but like a typical Angels pitcher, he allowed a 2 out hit, a double. But he got the final out to secure the 12-5 win.
