LA Angels Wednesday News Crash: World Series 2021

Good morning Angels fans, have some links!

Angels News

Skaggs death case is getting new wrinkles. That is a messy thread.

Good news, the Angels are looking for pitching! Bad news, it doesn’t mean it will happen. With the Angels roster for next year looking rather bleak in the pitching aspect, you would hope they actually pull it off this time.

We will have our own “If I were Perry” articles this year, but the actually Perry has a head start as he released 3 players.

Trying to figure out what is at stake if the Angels sign anyone? Here you go. 2nd and 5th round pick for signing a QO FA.

Manfred has awarded Shohei Ohtani with an award!

yay!

Around Baseball

With a work stoppage likely happening now, this offseason is uncertain for everyone. Especially the Rays and A’s.

Padres looking for a new manager, Ozzie Guillen anyone? Might be better than Soth

Robo Umps are appearing in some leagues, how are the doing so far?

As the Astros and Braves face off in the World Series, the question remains, have fans forgiven the Astros for being cheating cheaters who cheat? Nah.

Speaking of, Braves won game 1, and also won everyone a free taco!

Also, Charlie Morton broke his leg and STILL pitched 3 innings.

With a new Japanese star ready to move to America, who will get him? Can anyone if the season gets delayed?

Anything I missed? Post below for upvotes!

Well, the guy from Milwaukee turned down an interview for the Mets job, and now the GM in St. Louis has done the same. Must be a pretty damned screwed-up workplace for this many people to turn down a high-profile job like that. And Happy BD, Red!!!!

I also heard that Brian Sabean wants the job since he’s been kicked to the curb as a consultant in San Fran . Only problem is the Mets probably think he’s too old and archaic for their new age desires to be the Giants or Doyers

I may have the answer to The Mets search ……… 2002heaven !!!!! He can send in an electronic resume with just a whole bunch of pictures of players who did really well in 2021, 2020, and 2019. No names linked to the players of course.

Had the Cleveland baseball execs done a simply Google search they’d have seen a team named the Guardians already existed and had a trademark.

That’s the time to make a phone call and ask about the cost of buying the name. Get that handled before going public.

Now they just look like tools and will end up paying more.

Oh, I’m sure they knew, which is probably why The Indians files for a trademark in the East African Island of Mauritius on April 8th.

The question is how much will the roller derby team want/ask for?

If the Indians pay enough I am sure the roller derby team owner would gladly change their own name.

There are probably hundreds of schools in college sports who have the same nickname ( bulldogs, wildcats, tigers just to name a few ) What about St Louis a long time ago had the baseball and football team with the same name a bird, not the Catholic priest in the same city? The NY Giants and NY Giants in FB and MLB. Most likely when it comes to pro sports as long two teams don’t have the same nickname in the same sports league then it’s probably OK .. What’s a Guardian look like anyway a tough talking raccoon?

So when did gambling advertising become okay? I swear every second ad was for gambling. And the Fox broadcast had multiple sponsorships for betting websites.

We as a society regulate other addictive and deleterious activities such as smoking. No Joe Camel allowed. But here are advertisements being watched by kids showing the fun of gambling. At least there should be a requirement for counterpoint ads which show folks losing their homes and families as a result of degenerate gambling.

I just don’t get it. Thoughts?

Gambling and smoking are not comparable. Sorry.

Smoking is a behavior that adversely effects all those in proximity to the smoker. In fact, “passive smoking” and the effects of second hand smoke are more deleterious to those who inhale it than the smoke ingested by the active smoker.
This is a matter of scientific consensus.

Gambling is only destructive when it is pathological. There is such a thing as gambling recreationally and it not being pathological. Just ask the millions of people who visit Las Vegas every year whose lives it does not destroy or even harm, short of maybe thinning out their wallet. Of course most make that decision voluntarily and view it as recreation. Their choice does not harm anyone else around them.

The few people whose lives are truly damaged by gambling need to get help. Blaming “gambling” instead of the person who misuses it is like blaming the gun for killing somebody instead of blaming the person who pulled the trigger.

I appreciate your viewpoint. My problem is not so much the existence of gambling. I agree that people can do what they want with regard to their money. The existence of gambling is different than the advertising of gambling. Having commercials showing people hitting a parlay and winning easy money while getting a haircut is not the message that I think we want to communicate to our youths. Gambling is an addiction and if the entry point is an advertisement for all the ‘fun’ and easy money that can be won – that’s a problem in my opinion. At least show counter-point commercials showing the realities that gambling can cause.

In response to the kids argument, it is up to parents to raise their children in such a way that they will make responsible decisions. There are dangers all over in the world. That doesn’t mean we stop living.

I mean, driving a car is statistically pretty dangerous, but people still do it. In fact, I would venture to say that far, far more people are killed in car accidents than people whose lives are destroyed by gambling. Yet you are not saying we should all ride bicycles instead.

Further, some of what you say is just factually incorrect. I quote “Gambling is an addiction(.)”

Ummm, no, it is not. Did you even read what I wrote above? Did you try to assimilate it? “Pathological gambling” means one has an addiction. However, not all gambling is pathological.

I hate to repeat myself but sometimes it is necessary.

First of all, I appreciate your passion but I think it is misplaced. I trust you are not an expert in whether or not gambling is addictive. We can disagree respectfully. I feel like you are saying it’s your way or the highway which is not what debate is about.

I have actually worked on this issue in litigation as part of a team and there were many renowned experts who testified gambling is in fact addictive. Winning stimulates the release of dopamine. People become addicted to the idea of winning and the feeling (dopamine) of winning. They become convinced the next bet will be the winning one. That’s not really new science – It’s been around for a long time. So while you might not want to accept the premise – scientists who study the human mind and addiction generally believe gambling is addictive. So it’s dangers are not akin to driving which is not addictive.

Clearly there are some people who are more susceptible to addiction than others. There are people who drink alcohol and do it in a manner that is to their tolerance and they never become addicted. Other people become addicted to alcohol and it becomes a problem. Does that mean there should be no alcohol, of course not. Am I saying that there should not be gambling because there is a risk of addiction- no. I am certainly not saying that.

The issue is advertising gambling during the World Series which we know is viewed by families. Parents are going to allow their kids to watch a sporting event – baseball is not like watching poker. You can decide not to expose your child to gambling shows like televised poker. But how do you keep your kid from watching the World Series. And why should parents have to make that decision?

It’s very easy to say that it’s a parents responsibility – but in today’s world with parents who are working two and three jobs and have many other responsibilities, I think that society does owe a higher duty to make these broadcasts free of gambling advertising just like we have decided to make them free of tobacco advertising. Is that too much regulation- well that can be debated.

We can fundamentally disagree and that’s okay. I can still respect your opinion and hope you can respect mine. No need to get upset.

Hmmm. You seem to be contradicting yourself here Fan.

First you say “I trust you are not an expert..” then you conclude with “I can still respect your opinion.” Initially you are discounting my opinion then you are not?

And btw, how do you know I am not an expert?

For your information, I am fairly well-versed on both addictive behavior in general and gambling. Those things were part of my training as a mental health professional. And I don’t feel that you being “part of a litigation” involving gambling trumps my knowledge or experience on the subject.

I know all about Dopamine. Don’t be so presumptuous as to assume that I don’t. I won’t assume you don’t know what addiction is, but I will say that it sounds like you don’t know or understand what an addiction is. An addiction basically means that one cannot stop of one’s own accord. So, are you telling me that the 49 million people who go to Las Vegas every year (approximately), most of whom gamble there are all suffering from an addiction? I don’t think so.

So, I’ll repeat for the umpteenth time, “gambling” and “pathological gambling” are not the same thing. One can engage in the behavior of gambling without being addicted to it. And just because someone gets a hit of dopamine when they win they does not mean they suddenly lose all self control.

I am done with this topic.

Have a nice day.

Come to think of it, so is being an Angel fan:

  • There’s no logical reason to be one .
  • The fanaticism can damage family and personal relationships
  • The fixation is so great we can routinely waste large sums of money to feed our addiction to possess worthless crap.

Interesting viewpoint. Yes, this is advertising another vice, another potential addiction.

Alcohol destroys far more lives than gambling yet it is advertised profusely. Tons of young, good looking people having a good time simply because of the cold beverage in their hands. Should those ads also go away?

I’m OK with a consistent standard. But not advertising alcohol or gambling isn’t going to make them go away.

Interesting comparison with alcohol for sure. One difference is alcohol is legal (if you are 21) but gambling is still not legal in most states. So what is being advertised is actually, technically, illegal activity.

I’m far less concerned by legality. It’s coming to the states that don’t already have it. Like weed.

You do bring up an interesting angle on addiction, though. Most gamblers won’t get addicted but some will.

I’d wager alcohol has a higher addiction rate, though.

Not to mention that at the time Rose played, MLB had exactly one unbreakable rule. “You will not bet on baseball, or you will be banned for life”.

Rose knew the rule, he did it anyways. Screw him.

After Shoeless Joe gets in, then we can start talking about forgiving Rose.

Jeff Joiner

Rose is confirmed to have gambled on far more games than Joe is alleged to have gambled. There’s no concrete proof with Joe but there is with Rose.

Rose was in direct control of player personnel decisions and would have a much larger impact on the outcome of games.

We can justifiably suspect Rose of rigging games on which he bet on on those he didn’t. If you do want to believe the pathological liar that he never bet to lose, that leaves a huge cloud of doubt on the games he didn’t bet.

In short, it is far easier to argue for Joe than for Rose.

Never really knew what “+350” meant when it came to a gambling line.

Thanks to Joe Buck explaining it to me last night, i get it now.

Put down $100. If you win, you get back $100 +$350 = $450

Is that right?

I will never forgive cheaters. Cheaters change the game for the worst. So Manuel gives out free passes, He orders Baseballs from the company that MLB owns called the Super Ball. Rawlings is a puppet company for MLB. I have never liked the Astros, never will like the Astros. Never will root for Altuve. Ditto Red Sux.

Braves in 4 or 5 would be cool. Braves winning series would be Karma. Braves winning the series w/o Acuna (Best player in NL imho) is crazy good.
