Angels cook up a cRISPy LOBsterfest in late-innings loss to Twins

Angels 4 Twins 5

Fresh off a narrow win yesterday, the Angels sought to run the same playbook on Friday night at Target Field. It didn’t start off so bad, but the ending left much to be desired.

In the first inning, Halos backstop Kurt Suzuki connected for a 2-run homer off Minnesota Twins’ veteran J.A. Happ. The following inning, playing time beneficiary Jack Mayfield continued his recent success with a dinger of his own. The Angels, off to a quick 4-0 start, wouldn’t score another run the remainder of the game.

It wouldn’t have been a problem if Alex Cobb and co. kept runners off the basepaths (the staff allowed 13 hits and 2 walks). They did not do that.

It wouldn’t have been a problem if Halos hitters hit more than 2-14 (.143 BA) with runners in scoring position. They did not do that.

It wouldn’t have been a problem if Tony Watson, Raisel Iglesias, and Kurt Suzuki combined to close the door in the 8th inning. After several Twins hits, a Ryan Jeffers single to left field (a .637 OPS hitter on the season!!) was enough to score two baserunners. The latter was courtesy of a Kurt Suzuki throwing error from home to third base. In other words, not good.

The loss wasn’t the bad part. The bad part was that the Angels lost in a rather predictable way, with a competitive game slipping from within their fingertips once again. They lost one of the few trade chips they have to injury (as Alex Cobb exited the game in the sixth inning with a blister).

Hope early and heartbreak late. Maybe that’s what’s in their DNA.

there were serious rumors he was going to go super cheap on the last draft. Baseball insiders were actually surprised we ended up with a pretty normal draft.

CTPG staff! Can we please have a pinned post detailing Arte’s treatment of his minor leaguers and a place for us to comment about it. I think it needs more than just a link in our daily news page. I’m interested to see what Perry’s fix is b/c Arte is so cheap, but he loves optics so the more we throw on this the more likely they might make real changes.

Apparently it is widespread in MLB. ESPN doesn’t like Moreno because he is a Trump supporter. That is why he is singled out. This doesn’t mean I don’t want Moreno gone because he is a horrible owner much like about 20 other ones in MLB.

I think there is some truth in that but Arte also has gone above and beyond other teams in pinching pennies. He fired all his scouts like twice when other teams didn’t. Other teams provide their players with decent meals and accomadations. I know the Cleveland owner is cheap but the Angels minor leaguer that was most vocal made it sound like he was way better taken care of in every other organization he’s been in.

What happened from the Arte from 2003-2010, to the one from 2011-2021? He wasn’t like this in the first few seasons. Something happened at the beginning of last decade that changed him.

Just speculation but I think the Hamilton contract and Pujols contracts to a much lesser extent have soured him on some things.

I really can’t see Rendon, Wilson or any other contracts that don’t work out for predictable, baseball related reasons being a problem. That is a risk within the scope of business.

Hamilton though – who came in (supposedly) on personal assurances to Arte, and where the failure was about personal responsibility (either Hamilton’s to control his addiction, or perhaps worse Arte’s to acknowledge hiring someone with an addiction that couldn’t predictably be controlled) changes his attitude, and limits his willingness to take on that kind of risk.

You would hope someone in his position would learn something after making deals like that, add CJ Wilson to that list, but nooooooooooo, he just keeps on not knowing nuthin’ and. Arte you are a Morano.

So much success. So much wealth. So much power squandered in your silly ideas, and foolish friends. You are ruining something that was finally successful.

Like everything else you do in life, you get full credit for this. That is the kind of man you are.

Lol, so he turns around and offers a suspect deal to Rendon. I think Moreno is all surface. He will spend if he perceives $$$ return (the major league talent) and clearly doesn’t see the return on minor league and staff investment in same light. He is the guy who will buy luxury brand names just so he can show off to his buddies

But yet he scored the FSW TV cable deal which at the time the biggest in MLB history. Who the hell is advising him? He won’t hire a POBO, the man’s making more damm bank than his predecessors ( Disney & the Autry’s ever dreamed of ) he inherited one of the strongest farms just 3 yrs into his ownership. The TB D-Rays, A’s, Guardians…LOL!!, Brewers, and I dunno how long the joyride down in SD is gonna last but they’re at $161M ( just signed Fernando Tatis Jr to a huge long term deal ).

Not to get off topic but there is something seriously wrong in MLB. Moving the All star game, having a team change its name because people are offended by the name Indians. We are truly living in the end times.

I don’t mind changing it from Indians. I mean if people are offended then it’s offensive. They got rid of that Chief Yahoo quickly and that was good. My problem is I think the new name is terrible. Maybe I’ll get used to it but for now it’s “what??”

So are two NFL owners ( Jacksonville & Houston’s owners are YKW supporters ).
Arte and Shahid Khan of the Jags are the only two non white team owners in the Big Three sports leagues. I haven’t seen much negative news about the Jags other than have sucked the past few years.

The RISP make it a tough pill to swallow but I agree with you. The lineup we put on the field was putrid. Before the game started, I think many here would have gladly taken 4 runs from that lineup. Flipside of course is the Twins pitching mostly sucks.

no team that has there minor leaguers sleeping in cars is even going to SNIFF the postseason. I genuinely believe they do not make the postseason as long as Arte is owner. Considering he won’t allow a full blown rebuild, but its not even a rebuild. It is a philosophy of narcissism that flows from deep within the Angels organization. Its like a cancer that distorts reality and makes the game about the presentation and not the product. I don’t expect this team to play deep into October for a long, long time. I think Trouty plays his full career without a world series appearance. Just my opinion.

JackFrost

the “philosophy of narcissism that flows from deep within” (if there is such a thing, and I’m not sure there is) comes from one man and one man alone. His name is Arturo Moreno.

If that assessment is correct, and I’m not saying it is or isn’t, then all we can do is wait out his old age and anticipate his eventual death.

I don’t think Pujol’s moral character is all that great because I am confident he lied about his age to get a lot of his money, but at least he saw the DR Angels players in similar situations and helped them out a bit out of his own pocket. Well done Albert! Shohei sees tons of support staff around him incredibly underpaid I can only imagine and that led him to donate his HR Derby proceeds to them. Well done Shohei. Arte is Scrooge, he knows how little minor leaguers get paid, he sure as heck should have after Albert stepped in helped the DR players.

I agree with pretty much everything you say there. And I DO think Pujols is a good person, even if he did lie about his age, and I am not convinced he did.

And I am sure that more folks than just Albert and Shohei have seen the way things work with Arte. I’ve said it before, but the whole Skaggs/Kay situation is symptomatic of a sick system.

I do think there are good people around , people that care. I think Maddon cares. As much shit as people here give him and as much undeserved blame as he gets, I do think he would like to see things change, and, be one of the reasons it does change.

And, moreovoer, I think he can be. Despite the Arte mess I believe things can get better.

Perry said he was going to look into it, he will have to look into it and frame it in a way that the Arte, Carpino , Kuhl group green light it. Numbers, reports, with photos will need to be presented. Along with a solution with the benefits of that solution.

gitchogritchoffmypettis

The thing is, there ARE real benefits to solving this issue. It can save Arte MILLIONS if he builds a good farm. The powerpoint shouldn’t be that hard to make.

Ohhhhh. Deep evil hero thought here. What if PTP and friends, being from generally good orgs with good farms, aranged to have this whole situation highlighted so they could shift Arte and get to actual work on this stuff? Total baseless speculation we’d never find out about, but that would be dope.

If so bad timing. Reports about crappy conditions when you are still trying to sign draft picks is not smart.

matthiasstephan

That is probably true, but honestly most of the pitchers we drafted are already college pitchers. This is still a payday, and a chance to play. They can’t pick freely from the 30 MLB organizations anyway. And if it is true that most teams do this to some extent – then that is likely factored in by their agents already.

I read they have to put it up for bid for housing development and it is likely that bid would be higher than Arte’s, however the city can still sell to Arte if they are willing to take a 75 million fine.

As a fan I would hate to see you turn out to be right but its sure looking likely that once the players and team he bought from the prior organization largely moved on and it truly became his team that this is what we get.
