Angels drop Wednesday afternoon game to A’s

The Angels entered the rubber game Wednesday afternoon hoping for the sweep. Griffin Canning, who has probably been the weakest non-Ohtani starting pitcher for the Angels thus far this season, matched up against Chris Bassitt, who has had a good year but was faced with the tough task of stopping this Los Angeles offense.

We probably knew deep down that it wasn’t going to be pretty today when this middle-middle pitch from Canning got absolutely blasted.

Have no fear, Mike Trout is here. Trout continued his torrid streak taking this pitch on the inner half and shooting it out over the right-center wall. Tie game.

That tie score lasted all of half an inning. In the top of the second, Canning allowed a double to Mark Canha, and then Robbie Grossman lifted this ball out of the yard:

But the Angels would tie it up once again. After Brian Goodwin doubled (and nearly got thrown out at second by Ramón Laureano, which would have been fitting for the outfielder given the defensive day he had), Matt Chapman mishandled David Fletcher’s hot shot, and Tommy La Stella and Trout each drove in a run.

Once again, the equilibrium would not stay long. Stephen Piscotty broke the tie in the top of the fourth:

As poor as Canning was, Laureano was a different story. He was a gliding monster out there in center field, showing off his incredible range. He came in:

He went back:

He was absolutely insane. Why did he appeal the suspension!?

Matt Chapman drove in another run with a double that would have cleared the wall in most other MLB parks, but Anthony Rendon did actually clear the fence with his third home run in three days.

The Angels bullpen struggled in the eighth, walking three and eventually allowing three runs, a prospect that effectively blew open the game.

Two of three isn’t bad, but it definitely wasn’t the sweep that many were hoping for.

Canning looks a little off. I hope his elbow isn’t still a problem, but his velocity is down

BTW, Wednesday was not the “rubber game.” The Angels had already won the series, lol.

I had to go out but I had my phone. When I saw “Inherited runners: Buttrey 3/3” I was glad I’d gone out.

If it wasn’t for the appeal on the suspension it may have been a sweep!
