LA Angels Tuesday News Crash

The Angels traded away several players yesterday. Hopefully the team will improve in the future. What does everybody think? Did the Angels nail the tear down? The really big prospect haul came back in the Jose Soriano trade.

Here are the biggest trade candidates who weren’t traded.

Skip Schumaker got himself ejected during the singing of God Bless America. Don Kelly got himself ejected for arguing about the rain.

Clubs right away started calling the Blue Jays inquiring about Jose Soriano.

Jo is batting 2nd tonight for Cleveland…. They are throwing him right in the fire.

I predict Jo goes yard in win….

We will start regretting this one pretty quickly…

Mmmm disagree. Adell is basically a major league replacement level player over his career. He definitely has his moments. But he’s not a player you regret trading except if you only pay attention to his highlights.

Jo and Logan were both great young men and well liked by fans and teammates. Unfortunately, they were both performing poorly here and were not likely to improve. We certainly wish them the best and hope they are successful with their new teams.

Some BG on Ballesteros, which others might have already shared…

• He’s a rookie and started the season white-hot, with a 1.170 OPS in April. They were talking ROY in Chicago like it was a fait accompli.
• Then May came and the guy promptly went ice cold. Like 0-Kelvin-cold. Had two hits in three weeks.
• His June wasn’t much better so they sent his ass down, and he really wasn’t much better in Iowa (.700 OPS). And now he’s here.

The dude is obviously talented, and six weeks of atrocious hitting shouldn’t take the shine off any prospect. I looked but didn’t find any theories about why/how pitchers suddenly figured him out. He’s an aggressive swinger, yeah… but he actually drew more walks during his hell-month in May than he did in April, so it’s probably not a “he’s just chasing everything” scenario.

Hopefully all he needs is a reset, and the Cubs didn’t see anything that specifically made them want to move on from him.

Kid’s only 22 and has fewer than 250 plate appearances in the majors. Catchers ripen more slowly than other position players. Even at AAA, he was walking more than he was striking out, and striking out less than 15% of the time. That’s 60 grade hit tool stuff.

Even in a “down” year, he’s only hitting 9% worse than a league average player, which is basically league average for a catcher.

But the post important stat is, again, that he’s only 22. He’s a full year younger than Christian Moore.

I saw TJ Ford got promoted to Low A Rancho Cucamonga so I’m sure there are a ton of other moves. Hopefully the Rancho rosters sorts out with some of their top draft picks from this year too. Probably not Grindlinger since he’s only 17. But would nice to go down and see Ford, Willits, Grahovac, and their 2nd rounder.

Here’s my take on recent events. Thus far, change has been incremental and we have a long way to go. the 2027 season May happen only partially or not at all. We’re not likely to be a competitive team in 2028 so anyone who is a FA after that is of little use to us if we don’t plan on extending them.

  1. We fired our incompetent GM and hired a real one.
  2. We made an attempt to adjust our draft strategy
  3. We traded away some players, only 2 of which had any actual value
  4. We added some badly needed minor league assets
  5. We still have the same manager, but we got rid of 3 unproductive guys who he insisted playing everyday, forcing him to play better people without actually telling him to. Like them or not, O’Hoppe, Soler, and Adel were black holes in the line up and at least 2 of them will be replaced by better hitters. The catching position remains a black hole but we may have replacements ready by 2028 which may be the first time we actually need them.
  6. We positioned ourself well for 2027 if there is a significant work stoppage and 2027 was going to be a lost season anyway and Arte is still making money.

We have a long way to go, but with the exception of Soriano, the team may actually be better off than it was.

Not being able to successfully trade Neto and Detmers was disappointing unless you plan to keep them long term.

Nothing of any real significance may happen for a long time if there is no 2027 season.

Haven’t had this much interest in an Angel game since opening weekend and the Yankees series all the way back in April.

I expect them to still suck, but at there are pieces that may contribute something in the future, unlike Soler, Yates, Suter, etc.

I now adjust my Trade Deadline grade to an A, Soler has been DFA’d within 24 hours of the deadline. No more penciling him into the clean up spot!

Did the Brewers just not try hard enough? Did the Tigers accept the right package? You decide

Milwaukee’s initial proposal was also three prospects, according to sources. All three were hitters, and at least two were Top 100 prospects. One of them was shortstop Luis Peña, who is No. 18 on MLB Pipeline’s Top 100. The Brewers’ other position player prospects in MLB Pipeline’s version of the Top 100 are Jesús Made (who is No. 1 overall and was off limits), outfielder Luis Lara (who is No. 64 and probably wasn’t in play after the Brewers committed to him via a seven-year contract extension in June), infielder Jett Williams (No. 76) and outfielder Josh Adamczewski (No. 87).

Different sources believed the third hitter was either on one version of a Top 100 list as well, or just outside.

The Tigers, though, wanted a controllable Major League pitcher in the deal. None of the sources would say who they favored, but Logan Henderson was among the names teams were asking for most often.

This quote, if accurate, underscores the twisted part of the trade deadline. IF the Brewers are sold on Made and Boston is sold on Arias, then they would not offer much if anything for Neto

I don’t think the Brewers were ever in the market for a shortstop. It’s always been a pitcher, and it was either Reid or Sori, or both, that we were hoping and wishing that Milwaukee would take.

Red Sox were entirely a different story. And seeing how bonkers and insane the way they navigated the trade deadline, they could have still tried to get Neto and keep Arias, or flip Arias, or do something else.

It might simply come down to how Detroit’s front office values prospects.

For me, River Ryan’s injury history outweighs his undeniable talent. I would not want him back as part of a deal. But if Detroit sees it differently then Ryan is a very valuable chip.

These last 50 games are gonna be hella trippy

Angels transactions:

•Recalled RHP Ryan Johnson from Triple-A Salt Lake yesterday
•Reinstated INF Adam Frazier and RHP Ben Joyce from injured list
•Selected the contracts of RHP Shaun Anderson (#64) & LHP Blake Weiman (#68)
•C Moisés Ballesteros (#13) reports to the Angels roster
•Designated OF Jorge Soler for assignment

Pitched for the University of Kansas and was drafted by the Pirates in 2017. Floated around several organizations since and at age 30 never pitched in the majors before. Pitched in relief at Rocket City. Stingy with walks and good strikeout numbers there, but seems like a pretty fungable reliever that will be off the roster before long.

There’s zero excuse to keep Mike Trout in center field now. Just slide him over to right, let Rada take CF for the rest of the year, and keep Ballesteros away from the Packing District down the street.

As left fields are typically less cavernous than right, better option. At this point, just stick him at DH.

if he insists on playing the field, I’m ok with it since we’re not competitive anyways. Injuries to him won’t derail making the playoffs, so let him have his fun out there. Just do it in LF.

There may be zero competitive reasons to keep Trout in center — but you are forgetting the basics. Mike likes playing there and he is the face of the franchise. Sometimes those things matter.

Rada is only 20 years old (almost 21). He’s not doing that well at Salt Lake (he’s doing fine, but not blowing the league away or anything). He’s not on the 40 man, so in the event of a lockout, he would not be subjected to it and could play in the minors during a work stoppage.

I think those are valid reasons to leave him in AAA. I understand the other side of the argument though and it would be fun to see him play on the big league club.

gitchogritchoffmypettis

Oh no. Soler’s gone. What can I mindlessly bitch about without having to look stuff up?

Oh wait. I can do that with just about anything on here, it doesn’t matter. This is a safe space. I can probably just savage who ever is catching and just about any bullpen arm and come out looking smartish right?

By my quick count on the website, there appear to be 3 slots open on the 25 man with the Soler DFA (and two on the 40). Im guessing Joyce, Klassen (although that may wait a couple of days) and Frazier (who I’m not overly excited about).

It was a bad idea that worked out terribly. If they didn’t want to pay canning, they could have just released him. The fact that they actively chose to pay $32 million to a 32 year old DH who hadn’t reached at least 2 WAR since 2019 was the epitome of the Perry front office.

smithy610

When Moz said yesterday that they intend to have Moises DH a couple of games in the O’s series, and make him catch the last game, I had a feeling that that was the end of Soler. Because there’s no way Mike is sitting down so that Soler can take the field while Moises is DH’ing.

Clearly he tried to get rid of Soler yesterday too but Moz cannot get a bag of balls or gum for Soler. He got a buzzer beater for Kirby, but nothing for this guy.

The money had to complicate things. No team would take on the salary, so the Angels would have had to eat the money. I’m not surprised that no contender wanted to put Soler on their roster. He’s not good enough to keep on ours.
